Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System

Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System

The Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS) is an air traffic control automation system currently being used in many busier TRACONs around the United States. STARS is intended to replace the Automated Radar Terminal System (ARTS) that was until recently in widespread use around the nation. However, ARTS is still common at many less busy facilities in the nation.

Features

STARS features many revolutionary changes in the way Air Traffic Control is conducted.

The system is currently being used at a number of TRACON sites throughout the US [FAA] and a number of military RAPCON sites that control military air traffic. [Raytheon]

An Air Traffic Control (ATC) system developed by Raytheon for use in larger airports.

The STARS phase II is called TAMR. It is also called [ [http://www.faa.gov/airports_airtraffic/technology/tamr/] [TAMR Phase I] . It is a combination of STARS equipment and CommonARTs at various TRACONs in the US NAS. The larger TRACONs still need CommonARTs capable equipment, where the smaller one can get by on STARS.
