Eddie Davis (born in Tampa, Florida) is an American football running back and wide receiver who plays for the West Virginia Mountaineers.
Early life
Davis attended Freedom High School in Tampa and excelled at football and a standout at track. Davis ran a 10.40 in track, and played different positions before he settled at halfback during his senior season. Davis ran for a memorable school-record 275 yards against Tampa Tech High and finished his senior year with over 700+ yards on only 89 carries, earning him honorable mention for all-county honors.
Collegiate career
Davis was recruited by West Virginia University late in the signing period after he had made a verbal commitment to conference-rival South Florida. Davis came to West Virginia, weighing 170 lbs. Head coach Rich Rodriguez redshirted Davis with a medical redshirt after he got considerable playing time in the game against Eastern Washington University, in which the Mountaineers had an easy win. Davis rushed for 65 yards on 15 carries, his only stats of the season. Davis then suffered a quad injury, putting him out for the rest of the season. Davis watched as starting back, Steve Slaton, rushed for 1,700 yards and the Mountaineers posted a Gator Bowl victory over Georgia Tech.
Eddie Davis was in the race to backup Slaton for the 2007 season in the spring, with fellow back Ed Collington. Slaton, who had missed most of the spring after connective surgery on his wrist, was the obvious starter, but he had no solid backup. Davis played in the 2007 Blue-Gold Spring Game, which is where he began to shine. Davis ran for 33 yards in the high winds, and even grabbed a few receptions. However in the season opener against Western Michigan, Davis was placed on the depth chart at slot receiver while freshman sensation Noel Devine backed-up Steve Slaton. Davis has a reception for two yards in the game. Davis then played in the victory against Connecticut, where he had a kick return for 24 yards.
