Laughter & Lust is a 1991 album by Joe Jackson.^[1] He had parted ways with A&M Records in 1990, who then released the compilation Steppin' Out: The Very Best of Joe Jackson, which became a Top Ten hit in the UK.^[4] Jackson subsequently signed a recording contract with Virgin Records.^[4]

On Laughter & Lust Jackson expressed some of his frustration with the music industry with "Hit Single", while "Obvious Song" and his percussion laden cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well" secured radio airplay.^[4] Music journalist, Martin C. Strong states "Laughter & Lust was Jackson's most direct, accessible material in years, a welcome diversion from his constant experimentation".^[1]

However, the release continued his gradual sales decline, failing to reach the U.S. Top 100, after which Jackson was not heard from on disc for three years.^[4]
