Kerheb

Kerheb

Kherheb, sometimes written as Ker-Heb, (in Hieroglyphs V28-T28-b, MdC transliteration "Xr.j-HAb.t") [Ermann & Grapow, 1926–1953, "Wörterbuch der ägyptischen Sprache" Vol. 3, 395.4-10] is a title for the ancient Egyptian lector priests who were masters of the temple ceremonies, reciting the religious texts [Byron E. Shafer, Dieter Arnold , "Temples of Ancient Egypt", 1998, p.12] and oversaw the funeral rites. They kept and interpreted the various religious writings.

The lector priests of a temple were organized hierarchically, the "Hr.j-tp-Xr.j-HAb.t" (foremost of the lector priests) standing at their head. [ Ermann & Grapow, 1926–1953, "Wörterbuch der ägyptischen Sprache" Vol. 3.9]
