Alexander Haslett

Alexander Haslett

Alexander Haslett (2 September 1883 – 17 January 1951) was an Irish independent (non-party) politician. He was the independent Teachta Dála (TD) for Monaghan in the Dáil Éireann from 1927 until 1937. He stood as an Independent Protestant candidate. His failure to be elected in both 1937 and 1943 was due to the decline in numbers of the Protestant population in County Monaghan, and perhaps also that Fine Gael also ran a Protestant candidate (Ernest Blythe).

Haslett was not of landed gentry stock—he purchased his own small farm under the 1903 Land Act. He was a very prominent member of the Orange Order and served as County Grandmaster for Monaghan.
