General elections were held in Trinidad and Tobago on 10 December 2001. The elections were held early due to internal divisions within the United National Congress, winners of the 2000 elections.
Results
The elections produced another hung parliament, with the two major parties holding exactly half of the 36 seats each. President A. N. R. Robinson sparked controversy when he appointed Opposition leader Patrick Manning of the People's National Movement Prime Minister, rather than incumbent PM Basdeo Panday, whose United National Congress had won more votes.
