"Counting Out Time" is a song by British progressive rock band Genesis from the 1974 album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Although most of the album consisted of group-written compositions, this song was written solely by Peter Gabriel. It was the first single to be released from the album, though it did not make a showing on any charts.

The song is an R&B-flavoured pop tune which depicts The Lamb's main character, Rael, remembering his first sexual experience. The lyrics describe his purchase of a book, Erogenous Zones and the Difficult Problem of How to Find Them, and his constant reliance on the book as he attempts to arouse his girlfriend – with disastrous results. Frustrated, he decides to return the book to the book store.

"Counting Out Time" was one of the three songs included from The Lamb on Genesis' 3-disc compilation, Platinum Collection. It was also added to the 2007 re-release of Turn It on Again: The Hits - The Tour Edition making it the only track from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway on the compilation (not including the 1999 remake of "The Carpet Crawlers").

The song is mainly in the time signature of 4/4, but the refrain mixes between 4/4 and 5/8.
