London , on 2 June 1971, that sawAFC Ajax of theNetherlands defeatPanathinaikos FC ofGreece 2 - 0. An incredible comeback in the second leg of their semi-final againstFK Red Star meant Panathinaikos were the first (and only) Greek side to reach a European Cup Final. However, Ajax were too strong, winning with an earlyDick van Dijk strike, and a late goal from substituteArie Haan .
