According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 266

As of the
censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 11,370 people, 4,463 households, and 3,311 families residing in the county. The population densitywas 43 people per square mile (17/km²). There were 4,916 housing units at an average density of 18 per square mile (7/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 98.66% White, 0.19% Black or African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.48% from two or more races. 0.82% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 4,463 households out of which 33.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.80% were married couples living together, 11.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.80% were non-families. 22.40% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.80% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.92.
