Lida Hooe Elementary School is a public primary school located in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas, Texas (USA). Lida Hooe Elementary School enrolls students in grades PK-5 and is a part of the Dallas Independent School District.

History

Lida Hooe School was named Sunset Hill School when it first was opened in 1920. The main building was finished in 1923, and in 1924 the name of the school was changed to Lida Hooe in memory of the former teacher and writing supervisor. (Lida Hooe was born on 14 September 1875, in Hungerford, Texas. She graduated from Dallas High School as valedictorian in 1892.)

As of 2001, Don Gersch, the elementary band teacher for band director for combined bands made up of students of Anson Jones, Lida Hooe and Rosemont elementary schools, won a five-state competition with novice musicians for 11 years. The combined sixth-grade band won first place in its division and "Most Outstanding Elementary Band" for 11 years in the Sandy Lake Amusement Park Band, Choir and Orchestra FunFest, which brings in competing bands from Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and New Mexico. In 1999 and 2000, the combined fifth-grade band won first in its division and Most Outstanding Elementary Band in its class.Egiebor, Sharon, "Band director keeps hitting note of success", article in "The Dallas Morning News", May 22, 2001, accessed via NewsBank Web site, (www.newsbank.com), November 15, 2007]

The organizer of the competition, Suzy Self, told "The Dallas Morning News" that judges wondered how Gersch taught the students so well. ""Those fifth-grade kids play music that would put most high schools to shame", she said. "It is amazing." A parent told the newspaper that Gersch is strict but patient: "He's a very hard teacher, He's very dedicated. Sometimes the kids want to quit. They love him and hate him at the same time. I've never seen my daughter so excited about anything."

Gersch, who had been teaching in Dallas public schools for 25 years as of 2001, said he used traditional teaching methods that focus on repetition, practicing scales and reading music. He also came up with a game he called "Rhythm Master" and had the students play it. He ran a snow-cone stand in the summer and after school to raise money for individual trophies, sheet music and a pool party at the end of each school year.

Chauncey Tilley, a mathematics teacher who spent most of his career at the Lida Hooe and Elisha M. Pease elementary schools until his retirement in the mid-1980s, was capable of calculating figures in his head "faster than a lot of folks could do on paper", one of his nephews told "The Dallas Morning News" after Tilley died in 2003. [Ladson, LaKisha, "CHAUNCEY TILLEY: Added math to children's lives", obituary article, "The Dallas Morning News", February 16, 2003, accessed via Newsbank Web site (www.newsbank.com) on November 15, 2007]

In 2004 seven sixth-grade girls accused a substitute teacher of fondling them in class. When Dallas police investigated the charges and interviewed the girls, they gave different versions of what happened, then recanted the accusations. Initially, the girls said the teacher only looked at them in an odd way, but when the girls were interviewed by police, they made the accusation about fondling. The teacher was suspended with pay during the investigation. The teacher had not had any problems similar to the accusation at any other district schools, a school district spokesman said.Martin-Hidalgo, Margarita, "Teacher cleared in abuse case: Police say Lida Hooe sixth-graders recanted molestation allegations", article in "The Dallas Morning News, April 19, 2004, accessed via NewsBank Web site (www.newsbank.com), accessed November 15, 2007]

Several parents of the girls criticized school administrators for what they said was a delay in reporting the accusations to police and for not keeping parents informed about the progress of the case. District officials met with more than 40 parents and said they would conduct a thorough investigation.
