Gerald and Sheila Broflovski (Polish:Browlowski) are fictional characters in the animated series South Park. They are the parents of Kyle Broflovski and Ike, who is their adopted son from Canada. Gerald is voiced by Matt Stone and Sheila has been voiced by Mary Kay Bergman and currently by Mona Marshall. In the episode "Butt Out", Cartman refers to them as Serbian Jews, and their surname appears to be mock-Slavic. Their first names are the names of Matt Stone's own parents, and the surname Broflovski is derived from Brosloski, the original maiden name of Stone's mother (changed to Belasco when an ancestor immigrated to the United States).

Gerald

Appearance

Gerald wears a pink yarmulke, a beige jacket and forest green trousers. He has brown hair, sideburns, a mustache which is separated in the middle, and a short, pointed beard. Gerald is bald beneath his yarmulke, as seen in "Major Boobage".

Personality

Out of all the parents in South Park, Gerald appears to be the most caring and rational father. He teaches Kyle on important morals, although his ideals and explanations may sometimes be flawed, and appears to be more concerned with the environment and current events than most South Park residents.

He is a kind, amiable person, though he can be obnoxious and stubborn once in a while. He does, however, have repressed gambling problems and drug problems (explored in "Red Man's Greed" and "Major Boobage," respectively), and is sometimes too obsessed with money (as seen in "Sexual Harassment Panda"). Mostly, though, he is seen as a responsible and caring father, sometimes to a fault.

Occupation

Gerald is a lawyer. The legal matters he's been involved with includes:

* Getting Chef's name put on the album "Stinky Britches" in "Chef Aid".

* Helping Cartman successfully sue Stan after Stan called him an "ass-sucker" in "Sexual Harassment Panda". Gerald then helped the other children sue each other after various forms of name-calling were classified as sexual harassment. This led to the case of Everyone vs. Everyone, which was dropped when Sexual Harassment Panda changed his name to Don't Sue People Panda.

* Uses his "super lawyer powers" to pass a bill for banning cats in "Major Boobage".

* Being the city attorney.

heila

Appearance

Sheila wears a midnight blue suit with her red hair in a beehive. She is overweight and shorter than average height. Curiously for a resident of Colorado, Sheila speaks with a rather broad Brooklyn accent (although it is mentioned in "" that she moved to the town from a large city).

Personality

Sheila fits almost perfectly into the mold of a stereotypical Jewish mother. She seems at times overprotective of her children, and has a tendency to stick her nose into other people's business. As a result of hearing something shocking or inappropriate, she is often heard exclaiming "WHAT, WHAT, "WHAT"!?". When she deems something harmful to her son (or to the Jewish community), she tends to make a huge, useless deal out of it, although in recent seasons she has remained largely out of the spotlight on big town issues. Cartman finds her extremely annoying and he regularly calls her a "bitch".

Occupations

She is usually a stay-at-home mom, but she was briefly the Secretary of Offense for the Clinton Administration in "".

Marriage

Compared to The Marshes and the McCormicks, Gerald and Sheila have a stable marriage and don't argue usually. However, their relationship did get strained in "Spontaneous Combustion," due to Gerald's erectile dysfunction, and in "Major Boobage", when Gerald is parodied as Elliot Spitzer, regarding 'Cheesing'. Gerald also seems occasionally annoyed by his wife's meddling in others' lives, though this seems to be fairly subdued.

Interestingly, the Broflovskis seem to have an open marriage, or at least have been known to have affairs. Gerald was one of Cartman's potential fathers in "Cartman's Mom is a Dirty Slut," implying he and Ms. Cartman may have had sex (although Sheila was also a potential mother when it turned out that Ms. Cartman was the "father" indicating she slept with Mrs. Broflovski as well); and Sheila is shown having sex with Chef in "Chef Aid." Gerald apparently knew about this, coming in a moment after and cheerfully asking "How was it?" Sheila responds that it was "pretty much what I expected."

Extended Family

Though never seen alive, Kyle's grandmother has been mentioned several times. Most of these references seem to be a reference to the same woman, Cleo, who is Sheila's mother. Gerald's parents have never been mentioned or so far appeared in the series.

Sheila also has at least one sister, who is never seen. However, Kyle's cousin, Kyle Schwartz (Sheila's sister's son) has been seen three times in total.

In the episode, "More Crap", Gerald mentions that he has a brother.

Episodes in which Gerald and Sheila Broflovski are prominent

* "Death" - Protest Terrance and Phillip.

* "Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo" - Tells Kyle off for claiming Mr. Hankey is real.

* "Ike's Wee Wee" - Tells Kyle Ike was adopted.

* "Chef Aid" - Gerald represents Chef in a court case over who made the song "Stinky Britches." Sheila gives Chef money after he has sex with her, which is for some reason, approved by Gerald (most likely because he doesn't want to look like a bad lawyer by having a client going to jail).

* "Spontaneous Combustion" - Gerald cannot get an erection with Sheila, yet he gets turned on by three young women who want to sue Randy for getting skin cancer. This implies that due to her appearance, or more likely her behavior, he finds Sheila unattractive.

* "Sexual Harassment Panda" - Gerald helps people sue each other for name calling which is classed as sexual harassment.

* "Asspen" - Goes with the other parents to Aspen but get stuck at a high-pressure timeshare sales presentation.

* "It's Christmas in Canada" - Have to give Ike back to his birth parents.

* "Mr. Garrison's Fancy New Vagina" - After Kyle is convinced surgery is okay, Gerald goes to complain to the doctor there. The doctor then convinces Gerald to have surgery to make him a dolphin.

* "Smug Alert!" - Gerald becomes snobbish after buying a hybrid car. He then makes the family move to San Francisco after he feels that nobody in South Park cares about the environment as much as he does.

* "Mystery of the Urinal Deuce" - Complains about Kyle being blamed for 9/11 by Cartman.

* "Miss Teacher Bangs a Boy" - Discovers Ike is having a sexual relationship with his kindergarten teacher.

* "Night of the Living Homeless" - Gerald loses his way in a homeless crowd, asking for change for a bus, and moves to California. His appearance in later episodes implies he found his way back to South Park.

* "Major Boobage" - Gerald makes cats illegal, due to their use to get high, but later gets high himself and fights Kenny while high. He then publicly apologizes.

Notes

* Although they are Jewish, Gerald and Sheila are seen in a Christian church service in "Cripple Fight," immediately prior to Cartman's entry.
* In the episode "Death", Sheila is called Carol by Liane Cartman (Probably because Liane's confusion with Carol McCormick)
* In the episode "Korn's Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery", Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny dig up the body of Kyle's late grandmother, Cleo Broflovski. It was revealed later in the episode that this was Sheila's mother, possibly suggesting that Gerald and Sheila could be related.
