Kansas City Comets

The name Kansas City Comets has been used by two different indoor soccer teams.

The Original Team

The first Kansas City Comets team began its existence as the Detroit Lightning in the original Major Indoor Soccer League in 1979. After one season, the team was purchased by serial entrepreneur Dr. David Schoenstadt (later co-founder of Discovery Zone) and moved, becoming the San Francisco Fog. However the very next season, Dr. Schoenstadt moved the team to Kansas City. The team would remain there until 1991 when it ceased operations.

Stars and fan favorites included Enzo DiPede, Billy Gazonas, Gino Schiraldi, Greg Makowski, Victor Petroni, Jan Goosens, Kia, Dale Mitchell, Alan Mayer, Zoran Savic, Jim Schwab, Gordon Hill, Tasso Koutsoukos, Manny Schwartz, David Doyle, Elson Seale, Yilmaz Orhan, and Ty Keough as well as coaches Pat McBride and Rick Benben.

The Second Team

The second Comets franchise was founded in 1989 as the Atlanta Attack, as part of the then American Indoor Soccer Association, which became the National Professional Soccer League the next year. In 1991, the team was moved to Missouri as the Kansas City Attack to replace the recently folded Kansas City Comets of the original MISL. The Attack played their first season at the Municipal Auditorium and moved into Kemper Arena in 1992. In 2001, the NPSL disbanded, and Kansas City with the five other remaining NPSL teams formed the new Major Indoor Soccer League. At that time, the Attack name was retired, and the team was renamed the Comets. In September 2005, it was announced that the Kansas City Comets would not play during the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons. There remained the possibility that a third Kansas City Comets team would be active for the 2007-2008 MISL season, but the franchise remained inactive, and the MISL ceased operations on May 31, 2008.
