South Mountain High School is a Public high school in South Phoenix, Arizona serving students in grades 9 - 12.

History

South Mountain High School opened in the Fall of 1954. Its nickname was originally the Rebels and the original mascot was a Southern Colonel.

Magnet Programs

South Mountain High School teaches five of the eleven Magnet programs in the Phoenix Union High School District.
*Aviation and Aerospace Education: The program provides students with the opportunity to attain a Private Pilot's Certificate without cost, as part of the curriculum. Since its inception, the program has produced over 400 pilots. The program also provides students with academic and hands-on training in such areas as air traffic control, airframe and power plant maintenance and pre-engineering. Students can earn college credit in the Air Traffic Control courses and build time towards their Airframe and Power Plant License. The pre-engineering courses offer students the opportunity to learn aerodynamics, power plant operation and theory, aerospace systems, and stability and control. A course in Aircraft Design is also provided. All of the courses provide students with the academic rigor necessary in the areas of mathematics and science associated with the field of aerospace.

Academic Decathlon

South Mountain unseated North High School in the Academic Decathlon District Competition in November 2006. The win was celebrated all over the Phoenix Union High School District since North High was not only the five-time defending District Champion, but was also the two-time Regional Champion and had finished third in the State Competition only two years before. South Mountain went on to place second in the Regional Competition as their team Captain Stanford Prescott, scored the most points in the entire region of 29 competing schools. South Mountain was narrowly beaten (98 points separated 1st and 2nd place) by a tough Shadow Mountain team who also unseated North High School as the Regional Champion. South Mountain had the most individual medals of all schools in the Region and also won the Super Quiz event. Their team total of over 39,000 points was better than 18 other state championship teams. It is well-known that the Mathematics event was South Mountain's eventual Achilles' heel.

South Mountain's final rank at the State Competition was 13th. As the new topic for the 2007-2008 school year is the American Civil War, South won the District and planned on giving everyone a run for their money at Regionals. That's exactly what they did, they beat out 20+ Decathlon teams with over 40,000 points. This is the first time the Jaguars have ever won a Regional competition and the first time they've scored over 40,000 points.The program is run by Todd Decker, who has led his teams to qualify for the State Academic Decathlon competition 17 out of 18 years.
