The "Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine" ("JRSM") is one of the UK’s leading medical, peer-reviewed journals. "JRSM" is the flagship journal of the Royal Society of Medicine but has full editorial independence. "JRSM" has been published continuously since 1809, making it one of Britain’s oldest medical journals.

The present editor of "JRSM" is Dr Kamran Abbasi, a former deputy and acting editor at the BMJ. Dr Abbasi was appointed in July 2005, following the retirement of Dr Robin Fox who was editor of "JRSM" for just under 10 years.

Content

The "JRSM" is a forum for debate, education, and entertainment for clinicians interested in UK medicine and relevant international developments and research. The aim of the journal is to influence clinical practice and policy making across the whole range of medicine.

Each edition of "JRSM" contains original research articles, editorials, reviews and essays. The essay section brings together ‘think pieces’ on current medical issues and medical history. The journal also includes book reviews under a section called media to reflect the diversity of formats that deliver medical information. Each issue of "JRSM" features a selection of commentaries from the James Lind Library, an online resource for patients and professionals that documents the evolution of fair tests of treatments in health care.

In September 2006 "JRSM" introduced open peer review, making it one of the few medical journals in the world where authors and reviewers know each others’ identities. Open peer review reflects the journal’s emphatic commitment to openness in scientific discourse.

Editions

The "JRSM" is published monthly. The full text of each issue is available to subscribers online on the [http://www.jrsm.org/ journal's website] at the beginning of each month and all research papers are available free at publication.

Open access

In March 2006 all research and original articles published in the "JRSM" as well as issues more than three years old were made available for free online. By early 2007 digitisation of the "JRSM" should be completed with issues dating back to 1809 available online for free.

The journal’s open access allows for all research articles, the editor’s column and one other selected article from each issue is made available online for free. All articles will be free to access three years after publication.

ubmitting a manuscript

The "JRSM"’s prime responsibility is to readers. Authors should remember that the journal has an international and multi-specialty readership that includes primary care and public health professionals.

The "JRSM" operates a completely online submission system. The manuscript submission site allows authors to track their manuscript through the system from initial submission through to final decision. The electronic submission site also allows individuals to register as a "JRSM" peer reviewer online.

All contributions should be submitted electronically via the [http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jrsm/ "JRSM"’s online manuscript submission site] .
