Autotopagnosia

Autotopagnosia

Autotopagnosia is agnosia that affects the sense of posture. It is characterized by an inability to localize and orient different parts of the body. Autotopagnosia's cause is usually a lesion in the non-dominant parietal lobe or damage to the posterior thalamic radiations. It is also called body-image agnosia and somatotopagnosia. The thalamic radiations connect the thalamus with the cortex via the internal capsule. Some authors have criticised the concept as a nonspecific concept - that is, they feel that this symptom is part of a wider symptom complex of anomia, or inability to name things in general - not just parts of the human body.
