Bail Organa is a fictional character from the "Star Wars" universe, played in Star Wars Episodes II and III by Jimmy Smits.

Stephen Elliott provided the voice of Bail Organa in the 1981 .

Bail Prestor Organa is the Viceroy and Prince of the planet Alderaan, the husband of Queen Breha Organa, and Princess Leia Organa's adoptive father. In the waning days of the Old Republic, he also serves as Alderaan's representative in the Galactic Senate, succeeded later by the adult Leia.

Organa is mentioned in the Expanded Universe many times. A scene involving him was scripted but cut from "".

In Films

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Senator Organa seconded Queen Amidala of Naboo's vote of no confidence in Chancellor Valorum, paving the way for Senator Palpatine to become Supreme Chancellor. "(Note: This scene was filmed with a different actor but eventually cut.)"

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

As a prominent member of the Senate's Loyalist Committee, Organa realizes early on that the Separatists are a serious threat, and are going down a path that could only lead to war. He reluctantly approves of granting vast emergency powers to Chancellor Palpatine.

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Organa is very concerned about the changes in the Republic as the war wears on, particularly Palpatine's almost nonstop grab for power. However, he keeps his own counsel and dares not voice his concerns publicly, given Palpatine's wide popularity.

By the time of "", Organa is convinced that Palpatine has no intention of relinquishing his emergency powers at the end of the war as promised. He holds secret meetings with other concerned Senators, such as Mon Mothma of Chandrila, Fang Zar of Sern Prime, and Padmé Amidala of Naboo who now believe the Chancellor has designs on seizing total control of the galaxy. When Palpatine reorganises the Republic into the totalitarian Galactic Empire, Organa cofounds a secret resistance organization that would evolve into the Rebel Alliance.

In the aforementioned film, he witnesses the slaughter of a young Jedi Padawan by clone troopers outside the Jedi Temple at the start of the Great Jedi Purge. After that, he immediately begins searching for surviving Jedi. He rescues Masters Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi. In the meantime, his ship (the "Tantive IV") has received a message from the Jedi Temple, which orders all Jedi to return to the planet Coruscant, as the Clone Wars are over.

He becomes a close friend of Senator Padmé Amidala of Naboo, Leia's birth mother. After Padmé's death, he adopts Leia to protect her from her father, Anakin Skywalker, who has become the Sith Lord Darth Vader and had helped Palpatine exterminate the Jedi.

"Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope"

Bail Organa does not appear in "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope". The film does establish, however, that Leia's adoptive father, who is Bail Organa but is not specified by name, is secretly helping the Rebel Alliance, and that he was allied with and had served aside Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Clone Wars.

Organa is killed when Alderaan is destroyed by the Death Star.

Expanded Universe

Bail Organa is a prominent supporting character in the series' "Expanded Universe" of novels and comic books. In the ' and ' comic book series, he leads the resistance in the Senate to Palpatine's growing absolutism, and occasionally participates in adventures with the Jedi. He is also featured in the novels "The Paradise Snare" and "Cloak of Deception" and is a nonplayable character in "The Force Unleashed" video game. Confusion over identity

In "Episode I", Captain Panaka mentions a Bail Antilles as the representative from Alderaan, thus raising confusion as to whether or not this is supposed to be the same character.

The official site clarifies this issue somewhat, stating that Bail Antilles and Bail Organa were "both" slated to appear in "The Phantom Menace", but Organa's footage was excised. [ [http://www.starwarz.com/tbone/plugins/p2_news/printarticle.php?p2_articleid=176 Bail Organa/Bail Antilles ] ] In the screenplay, Bail Organa seconds the motion of no confidence in Chancellor Finis Valorum's leadership, and Bail Antilles is nominated to succeed as Chancellor. [ [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120915/trivia Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999) - Trivia ] ] Both were intended as two separate characters. Nevertheless, because his scene was cut, Bail Organa was recast for "Attack of the Clones". The Expanded Universe uses the appearance of the actor who played Organa in the cut scene, Adrian Dunbar, [ [http://www.fortunecity.com/village/martina/460/senate/ The Galactic Senate ] ] to represent Bail Antilles.
