William Paul Quinn

William Paul Quinn

William Paul Quinn (1788-1873) was the fourth bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Quinn was born in Calcutta, India. He was at the organization of the AME Church in 1816, ordained a deacon in 1818, and an elder in 1838. The General Conference of the church elected him a bishop on May 19, 1844. He became the Senior Bishop of the church in May 1849 and served until his death in Richmond, Indiana, United States, on February 3, 1873. Bishop Quinn was married to Mary Jane Quinn.

Paul Quinn College (founded 1872), the oldest African American liberal arts college in Texas, was named after him.

Quinn argued that the Divine Command theory should be accepted and not questioned, because God could be seeing to always do the right thing; even if he doesn't "appear" to be doing the right thing, the end outcome will be good. "Everything God does is good in essence"
