Released on August 27, 1991 and lingering on the charts for much of 1992, "Aces", Bogguss's third release on the Liberty Records label, was undoubtedly her breakout album. Bolstered by strong songwriting credits from the likes of Nanci Griffith, Cheryl Wheeler, and Beth Nielsen Chapman, "Aces" contains several of Bogguss's strongest tracks.

The first single, "Someday Soon," a yearning Ian Tyson tune, hit #12 on the Billboard country chart and was Bogguss's highest charting solo cut at the time. That performance, however, was soon beaten by the Nanci Griffith-penned "Outbound Plane" which climbed all the way to the #9 slot. Bogguss repeated this achievement with Cheryl Wheeler's "Aces," a song exploring the envy of success between friends. The highest-charting single from the album was its fourth and last. Co-written by Bogguss's husband, Doug Crider, "Letting Go" is a melancholy song of a mother whose daughter has grown up and is leaving home for the first time. Expressing the sorrow that nearly every parent has experienced, the song connected with a huge audience and went to #6 on the Billboard charts. As a testament to its universal appeal, the song has been featured on Oprah Winfrey's morning television show and various radio shows.

The record, itself, is Bogguss's highest-charting album and has gone on to earn an RIAA Platinum certification.

Following the success of "Aces", the Country Music Association recognized Bogguss's achievements in 1992 by giving her its Horizon Award, which is awarded annually to the artist who has demonstrated the most significant creative growth and development.
