Middleton war memorial

After World War I the township of Middleton, Suffolk decided that they commemorate the men who died for their country in the war. The memorial is in the form of a Sicilian marble Latin Cross on an octagonal base. There are 20 names for World War I and 5 for World War II.

The memorial was originally unveiled on 17 July 1921 by Major-General Sir Ronald Lane, the builder was Mr Fred Barber. The memorial cost £65 18s raised by public subscription. Details appeared in the East Anglian Daily Times 21st July 1921.

While at anchor in Scapa Flow, on 9th July 1917, HMS Vanguard suffered an enormous explosion, believed to have been set off by unstable cordite. Only three of her crew of over 800 survived

On 18th March 1915, the battlecruiser HMS Inflexible was involved in the bombardment of Dardanelles forts. She began to withdraw after receiving 9 hits from shells and then struck a mine. She was firstly beached to effect emergency repairs before proceeding to Malta
