- Araucania
Araucanía or Araucana [Vidaurre, Historia...] was the Spanish name given to the region of
Chile inhabited by theMapuche peoples known as theMoluche (also known as Araucanos by the Spanish) in the 18th Century. Prior to the SpanishConquest of Chile the lands of the Moluche lay between theItata River andToltén River . Following the great rising of the Moluche andHuilliche after theBattle of Curalaba in1598 during theArauco War the Spanish were expelled from south of theBío-Bío River . After many decades of further warfare the bounds of Araucania were recognized by the Spanish as being between theBío-Bío River andToltén River . This old region of Araucanía now is divided between theBío-Bío Region and theAraucanía Region of Chile.See also
