Pierre Ryckmans (born
28 September 1935 , inBrussels ,Belgium ), who also uses thepen-name Simon Leys, is awriter ,sinologist ,essayist andliterary critic .He studied law at the
Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Louvain), Chinese language, literature and art inTaiwan . He went toHong Kong , before settling down inAustralia in 1970. He taught Chinese literature at theAustralian National University , where he supervised the honours thesis of currentAustralian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd ref and later was Professor of Chinese Studies at theUniversity of Sydney , from 1987 to 1993.Pierre Ryckmans wrote that he was requested to use a pseudonym before the publication of "Les habits neufs du président Mao" in 1971. He chose "Leys" after the main character of
Victor Segalen 's novel "René Leys " (published in 1922). ref|pseudonymIn 2004 he was awarded the

Ryckmans wrote a series of famous books about Chinese
