Ken Hogan (born 1 May, 1963 in Lorrha, County Cork) is a retired Irish hurling manager and former player. He played hurling with his local club Lorrha-Dorrha and with the Tipperary senior inter-county team in the 1980s and 1990s. Hogan later served as manager of the Tipperary senior inter-county team from 2003 until 2005.

Early life

Ken Hogan was born in Lorrha, County Tipperary in 1963. From a young age he showed great skill at the game of hurling. In fact, because of his skill and strength his friends nicknamed him "Killer". He was educated locally and later studied at Presentation College in Birr, County Offaly where his hurling skills were further developed. Here Hogan won five Leinster Colleges titles.

Playing career

Club

Hogan began playing hurling with his local club, Lorrha, at a young age. He first tasted success with the club winning 2 under-14 'B' championship medals in 1976 and 1977. He subsequently won a North Tipperary Under-21 'B' medal in 1983. Hogan also won 2 North Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship medals, captaining his side to the title in 1989.

Inter-county

Hogan also had a distinguished career with his native Tipperary. He joined the Tipperary minor hurling team in 1980, winning both Munster and All-Ireland honours in his first year. He subsequently played for the Tipperary under-21 side for three years, winning a Munster medal in 1983. Hogan later moved on to the Tipperary senior team where the success continued. In 1987 he won his first senior Munster, however, Tipp were later defeated in the All-Ireland semi-final. In 1988 Hogan began the year by winning a National Hurling League title. He once again captured a Munster title, however, Galway once again defeated Tipp, this time in the All-Ireland final. In 1989 Hogan captured his third consecutive provincial medal. In the subsequent All-Ireland final Tipp had an easy win over Antrim, the surprise semi-final winners. Hogan c;laimed his first senior All-Ireland medal. Two years later in 1991 Hogan won his fourth Munster title before winning his second All-Ireland medal following a win over Kilkenny. He captured a fifth Munster title in 1993, but Tipp lost out once again in the All-Ireland semi-final to Galway. Hogan retired from inter-county hurling shortly afterwards.

Managerial career

Hogan maintained a keen interest in hurling following his retirement as a player. He served as a selector under Fr. Tom Fogarty in the mid-1990s when Fogarty was Tipperary manager. He later held the same position under Nicky English in the early 2000s. Hogan succeeded Michael Doyle as manager of the Tipperary senior hurling team in 2004. He served as manager for two seasons but, apart from a Munster final appearance, he had little success.
