Democratic primary

On the Democratic side, Indianapolis businessman Jim Schellinger and former U.S. Rep. Jill Long Thompson had announced their candidacies. Indiana Senate Minority Leader Richard Young also ran early, but he dropped out of the race well before the primary. Schellinger, with support of key Democratic officials such as former Indiana House Speaker John Gregg, former Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson and the late U.S. Rep. Julia Carson [cite web| url = http://www.jimschellinger.com/2007/07/endorsements_1.php | title = Schellinger for Governor: Endorsements | accessdate = 2008-04-26 | date = ongoing | publisher = JimSchellinger.com] , had raised over $1 million in campaign funds. Long Thompson's support came from Democrats such as popular former U.S. Rep. Andrew Jacobs, Jr. and former Indiana First Lady Maggie Kernan [cite web| url = http://www.hoosiersforjill.com/news/ | title = Hoosiers for Jill: News | accessdate = 2008-04-26 | date = ongoing | publisher = HoosiersforJill.com] .

Thompson won the Democratic primary and will be the nominee. If she wins the general election, she will be Indiana's 50th Governor. She will also be the first female governor of Indiana.

Jill Long Thompson was declared the winner by just over 13,000 votes. [cite web| url = http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080507/NEWS0502/805070453 | title = Long Thompson beats Schellinger | accessdate = 2008-05-07 | date = 2008-05-07 | publisher = The Indianapolis Star]

On June 16, Long Thompson announced that her running mate and the Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor would be longtime State Representative Dennie Oxley. Republican nomination

The current Governor of Indiana, Mitch Daniels, defeated the incumbent Democratic governor Joseph Kernan in 2004, becoming the first Republican governor in Indiana in 16 years. On June 16, 2007, Daniels announced he was running for re-election with his Lieutenant Governor Becky Skillman. Daniels will compete against Jill Long Thompson in the general election in November. If Daniels wins re-election, he will remain Indiana's 49th Governor.

Libertarian race

Andy Horning, engineer, Libertarian Party activist and frequent candidate, ran unopposed for his party's nomination. He will appear on the November ballot with Lisa Kelly for Lt. Governor.

Polling

Polling had shown that largely Mitch Daniels had repeatedly led slightly against both Jill Long Thompson and Jim Schellinger. Long Thompson, the Democratic Party of Indiana's gubernatorial candidate, recently has slipped further behind Daniels in most proposed polls.
