Glencairn (Belfast)

Glencairn (Belfast)

Glencairn (Irish: Gleann Cairn; meaning "glen of the cairn" or "heap of stones") is an electoral ward of West Belfast, taking its name from the Glencairn area. The ward was created in 1985 as a trimmed down version of the former Ballygomartin ward. The ward is heavily Protestant although there is a small catholic enclave in the Mountainview area opposite Ardoyne.

Under current proposals for restructuring local government in Northern Ireland, the ward is to expand to take in parts of the Woodvale ward with the name to be changed to Forthriver ward.
