Hermanas Mirabal (aka Salcedo) is a province of the Dominican Republic. It was split from Espaillat Province in 1952 and was originally called Salcedo (the name of its capital city). On the 21st of November 2007, President Leonel Fernandez changed the name "Hermanas Mirabal" to commemorate the Mirabal sisters who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country by giving up a privileged life to fight against the abuses of a powerful and corrupt Dominican dictator: Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina.

The province is very fertile and its main agriculture product is plantain.

The Mirabal sisters came from Salcedo and they are buried here too after their murder.

Municipalities and municipal districts

The province as of June 20 2006 is divided into the following municipalities ("municipios") and municipal districts ("distrito municipal" - D.M.) within them: [cite web |url=http://www.one.gob.do/index.php?option=com_docman&task=cat_view&gid=113|title=Listado de Codigos de Provincias, Municipio y Distritos Municipales, Actualizada a Junio 20 del 2006|author=Oficina Nacional de Estadistica, Departamento de Cartografia, Division de Limites y Linderos|language=Spanish|accessdate=2007-01-24]

Notable residents

The former vice president to Leonel Fernadez, Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal comes from a tiny town a few minutes away from Tenares, Salcedo by the name of Ojo de Agua or "Eye of Water." Also born in Ojo de Agua are the famed Mirabal sisters for whom the province is named.

Also Miss Dominican Republic 2008 Marianne Cruz is from the city of Salcedo
