Life and marriage

In the 1950s Princess Margaretha had a relationship with Robin Douglas-Home, a Scottish aristocrat. He came to visit her in Sweden, but they never married. There was speculation in the press that this was due to Princess Sibylla forbidding the match,[1] but Princess Margaretha's nanny and confidante Ingrid Björnberg states categorically in her memoirs that the breakup between the two was caused by Princess Margaretha's reluctance to enter into an engagement with Douglas-Home.[2]

She met her future husband, John Ambler, at a dinner party in the United Kingdom in 1963. On 28 February 1964, Princess Margaretha's engagement was announced, to the British citizen, John Kenneth Ambler (Dorking, Surrey, 6 June 1924 – 31 May 2008), son of Captain Charles Ambler and wife Louise Gwendolen Cullen. They were married on 30 June 1964, in Gärdslösa Church, Gärdslösa, on the isle of Öland. As a result of her unequal marriage, she lost her style of Royal Highness and became Princess Margaretha, Mrs. Ambler.

With her marriage, Princess Margaretha, Mrs. Ambler put an end to her life as a public person, as she moved to the United Kingdom. She lives an anonymous life and does not perform any official engagements on behalf of the Royal Family.

Princess Margaretha, Mrs. Ambler and her husband later separated, but never divorced.[3]

Princess Margaretha, Mrs. Ambler's marriage has produced three children:

  • Sibylla Louise Ambler (b. London, 14 April 1965), married civilly at Münsing and religiously at Kloster Schäftlarn, near Starnberg, on 19 June 1998 Cornelius Freiherr von Dincklage (b. Esslingen am Neckar, 29 April 1971), and had two children.
  • Charles Edward Ambler (b. London, 14 July 1966), married in London on 31 July 1999 Helen Ross (b. Huddersfield, 3 March 1969), and had two children.
  • James Patrick Ambler (b. Oxford, 10 June 1967), married at Polhawn Fort, Rame Head, near Torpoint, Cornwall, on 25 July 2001 Ursula Mary Shipley (b. St Austell, 9 July 1965), and had two children.
