Career

After a long karting career as a child, Stefan stepped up to open-wheel racing in November 2006, competing in the Formula Palmer Audi Autumn Trophy at Snetterton and Brands Hatch. Stefan gradually improved over the course of his first six car races and finished the six-race mini-series in ninth place, also ending as top rookie. He picked up three top-six finishes and set fastest lap in the final round at Brands Hatch.

Stefan showed that the Wilson speed gene is as dominant as ever. Stefan competed in the 2007 Formula Palmer Audi Championship, the 10th anniversary of the series. Also the 10th anniversary of when his brother Justin won the first FPA title. However despite the obvious expectations of following in Justin’s footsteps, Wilson the Younger has the potential to make a name all for himself.

He finished 2nd in the championship after a great final round at Croft, where he scored 2 podiums after his worst qualifying of the season, only starting 7th and 9th for the two races. Stefan drove excellently overtaking a total of 11 cars which provided the most of the racing action that weekend. He also closed the final gap between him and the vastly more experienced driver Tim Bridgman to just 28 points.

He scored 4 wins over the course of the season; the first came in round 4 of the championship at the renowned Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit in front of nearly 50,000 spectators. The second half of Wilson's championship was mighty impressive as he scored 4 pole positions and 3 of his 4 wins. He took a tactical win at Castle Combe, after starting 3rd he overtook the cars of Bridgman and Clarke into Quarry on consecutive laps, as the rain started to fall, all the drivers were on slick tyres, this made his drive more impressive as he drove away from the pair and made no mistakes in the tricky conditions.

The next round would be held at the Oulton Park international circuit where he scored 2 pole positions, the first race he showed dominant form as he won the race by over 2 seconds, he also recorded a fastest lap nearly half a second quicker than any other driver. The championship then went to Donnington Park for the penultimate round, before the championship end at Croft. Wilson again took pole position, and victory, whilst also setting fastest lap and his first lap record.

Wilson ended the championship in 2nd place, with a tally of 4 wins, 9 podiums, 4 pole positions, 5 fastest laps, and 2 lap records. These are great achievements for only his first year of single seater racing.
