Resistance dance

Resistance dance

Resistance dance is a type of dance seeking a triumph over oppression through coordinated movement. Its roots are in a vast number of divergent historical struggles, resistance dance has proven itself an efficacious means of effecting socio-political change divorced from the need for armed combat or civil discourse. With a structure that defies definition, its coherence as a discrete form of dance lies only in its underlying ability to both impact and empower agents of change. Its practitioners many, some of the more happening "R-Dance" hotbeds include South Africa, the Palestinian Authority, and small liberal arts colleges in and around the United States.

Although many doubt the power of "R-Dance", it has proven to be a major source of comfort for those who participate. Although those currently participating in "R-Dance" need their own funding the movement is working towards creating grants and scholarships for those less fortunate. Avid members of "R-Dance" call it a "spiritually fulfilling" experience. However, critics of "R-Dance" call the movement a "hippie cult".
