Zoë Carpenter (born 27 November 1987) is a fictional character on the long-running British Channel 4 television soap opera "Hollyoaks".

She is played by actress Zoë Lister.

Zoë is a student at Hollyoaks Community College, she is studying Film Studies.

Character history

Zoë is an attractive, confident girl, although very much a tomboy. She was a former girlfriend of Joe Spencer, the two dated in high school before Joe dumped her. Zoë ended up going to HCC with Joe, and coincidentally, was one of the freshers taking Joe, Olivia, and Jessica's dorm. After trying and failing to stop the new freshers from kicking them out of their rooms, Joe told Zoë he regretted dumping her in high school. They went out for a meal and seemed to be getting closer.

Dog In The Pond Fire

Zoë, Kris, Joe and Olivia were present in The Dog when Sam Owen set it on fire. After Joe led Kris Fisher and Zoë out through the basement, he decided to go back and search for Olivia Johnson who had been pinned down by a beam, which Zoë disagreed with because she thought Olivia got out with the others and she didn't want Joe to die. Joe said he wasn't going to lose her again. These would be his last words to Zoë, as he died trying to save Olivia. Zoë and Kris tried to phone Joe, and followed his ringtone to a group of bodybags, leaving Zoë distraught.

Zoë rejected an attempted kiss from Will Hackett, as she had not yet recovered from the death of Joe, to whom she found herself attracted again despite their colourful past. In an effort to regain her confidence with Joe no longer around to help, she became a bit of an exhibitionist; first posing nude for Foz's art class (and being attacked by his jealous girlfriend Nancy Hayton for the privilege) and then experimenting with private nudity with cross-dressing flatmate Kris, who became a close friend.

Zoë had a brief relationship with Zak Ramsey; at first, a one night stand, before they confessed their feelings to each other. The relationship was sabotaged by Will, to whom she became close, although Will was paranoid and jealous of any other bonds she had. She was going to depart to New York City for a year due to her film studies. Will initially lied about the death of a former girlfriend, hoping Zoë would feel enough sorrow for him that she would stay in town. When she did not, he stole her passport, but Zak got it back for her. Out of any other options, Will then violently trapped Zoë's hand in the taxi door and broke it, meaning she couldn't go to America.

Will drugs Zoë

Things could only get worse for Zoë. Will got even more controlling and decided to look for houses. He tried to push her into agreeing, but she told him he was being a prat. They later made up again but Will dumped her. Zoë decided to get cosy with Zak in her room, and Will got jealous as he was watching on the secret webcam. Will then spiked Zoë's drink with the tablets she was given to take the pain away from her broken hand. Will then put the pill tub in Zoë's hand when she was sleeping and scattered the pills around her bed and her room so it would look to the other students that Zoë had tried to commit suicide by having an overdose. Zoë went into a coma whilst she was sleeping and was taken to hospital in the morning when Zak found her comatose in her bed. But when she came home, Kris said she was "wanting attention", and Will was sympathetic with Zoë.

Zak soon suspected something was up when he walked in Will's room when he had the webcam up on his laptop, emerging a picture of Zoë. Zak rushed straight to Zoë, and they both agreed to steal Will's laptop. Zoë set the fire alarm off, got the laptop, only for it to get stolen by Sonny Valentine and Michaela McQueen because Michaela wanted the bag for her birthday. They then sold it onto Gilly, who gave it to Kris. Zak & Kris found the webcam files of Zoë and then started worrying for Zoë's safety.

A rooftop showdown

Zoë was due to go to stay with her parents for a week or so, but she forgot her train tickets. As she want back for them, she walked into Will's room and saw him watching a webcam video of her crying on a television. She gasped, he locked her in his room, and when Zoë tried to escape she punched Will and in return Will violently twisted Zoë's broken hand. When Zak and Kris came back to find Zoë, Will gagged Zoë in the bathroom behind the door so Kris and Zak could not see her or hear her. When Kris and Zak went Will dragged Zoë in the living room and shoved her on the floor. Zoë demanded to know why Will spied on her but Will started throwing things around the room and told Zoë he loved her. Will then violently dragged Zoë up the stairs and onto the college roof, where Will left Zoë dangling off the edge. Zak saw and rushed up. Zak called the police and there was a flashback of when Will trapped Zoë's hand in the taxi door and when Will drugged Zoë. Will told Zoë he loved her and eventually let her go. Will was then arrested. Zoë has been left traumatised by Will's actions, only for her feelings to be truly shattered when flatmate Zak tried to kiss her. She then left to stay for her parents. When asked when she'll be back, she replied, 'The way I am feeling right now...never.'

Return and relationship with Darren

Zoë returned in late May 2007 only for her dad to turn up, giving Zak a lecture. Zak tried to persuade Zoë's Dad to let her stay, and he agreed.

Zoë and Darren Osborne clashed after he made some tacky comments about what Will had put her through, but they soon made up. After flirting with each other, they began to develop feelings, but Darren didn't want to betray his mate Zak. Darren tried to stay away from her, annoying her and flirting with other girls. Darren then said to Zak that Zoë had no chance with him, but Zak later set them up on a date after Zoë admitted her true feelings. Nothing went right for them during their attempts to make love, from being attacked by ants at a picnic to Darren seriously burning his hands while putting out a candle fire. Zoë was awkward about being intimate with a man after the way Will had violated her, and Darren wasn't the type of man who ever let a woman know his true feelings. Finally, they let down their defenses and made love.

Losing Jess and Darren

At the freshers ball, Zoë wore a gorgeous dress. Jess however was jealous as she had to make her own dress, due to not having any money. As Jess was talking to Zak she walked backwards into Darren, leading Darren to spill a bit of his drink on Zoë's dress. Later Jess was going to sponge Zoë's dress but as she went to do it Jess accidentally ripped Zoë's dress, which led Zoë to throw a glass of champagne over Jess. Jess reacted by punching Zoë and then the girls had a full blown fight on the dance floor.

The following day Kris locked Zoë and Jess in a room together until they made up. This did not work, so he showed them a video of the girls fighting that Zak recorded. They admitted it was childish behaviour and made up.

When Frankie fostered a seven year old child called Daisy, Zoë got on well with her and was angry when Darren was being so selfish about it and got Daisy thrown out, and ended her relationship with Darren. The next day the pair got back together when Darren agreed to Frankie fostering, but this was only the start of their troubles. Darren became addicted to gambling, even going so far as to steal Zoë's money. Zoë took him back, but she had no idea he'd slept with her best mate Jess.

She found out in November 2007 when Kris and Jess were talking in the radio studio and he accidentally pressed the on air button. Darren tried to plead with Zoë to get back together with him, but it was too late, she wrote on Jess's bedroom door the word TRAMP.

The day after, Sarah was in Washed up and Zoë came in with a bag of clothes. Zoë got upset, which resulted in Sarah asking Zoë to come back to her house. When Mike came home and found out out that Zoë is using Amy's room, he was very angry. Kathy told Zoë the only way Zoë was going to feel better about herself was to get revenge on Jess. Zoë, Sarah and Kathy went round Jess's bedroom at HCC halls and foamed Jess's bed then stole all of her clothes. Zoë then threw all of Jess's clothes around the village.

When Zoë agreed to accompany Darren to counseling, they hold hands but Zoë meant it as just being friendly. After the counseling, Darren tried to kiss Zoë but she rebuffed him before he accused her of playing mind games.

Mike Barnes

When Zoë moved into the Barnes home, she became friendly with Mike, even sharing the anniversary meal he had prepared for himself and a failed-to-show-up Kathy. Kathy began to suspect an affair, and threw all her clothes out into the street. This was the last straw for Mike and he asked Kathy to move out. Soon after her departure, Zoë confessed that she had had a dream about Mike, not realising he had the same feelings for her. Mike then kissed her, following which they were seen together in her bed.

When Zoë moved back out of the home, Mike decided to try and get her back at the SU Bar. Zoë agreed to go around to his place, where they continued their developing relationship.

In late February 2008, Amy's boyfriend Ste Hay ruined Leah's first birthday party by playing a tape he'd made of Mike and Zoë kissing. Sarah was horrified and lashed out at her father and the girl she'd thought was her friend. Mike stuck by Zoë, in spite of the reaction of his children, and a few days later, Zoë asked him to be her official boyfriend.

Zoë took on more of a mother role towards Sarah and Amy, much to Sarah's annoyance. Sarah flaunted her older boyfriend Roger Kiddle in Mike's face, but her games blew up in her face when Roger made a pass at Zoë. This seemed to soften some of Sarah's resentment towards Zoë, and she tried to comfort Zoë when she had a pregnancy scare. Unfortunately, Mike was very upset about the possibility of Zoë being pregnant, so much so that Zoë moved back into Halls.
