The Battle of Koprukoy was part of the Caucasus Campaign during World War I between the the Russian Empire and the Ottoman Empire, and occurred as the Russians were advancing to Erzurum. The Russians achieved total surprise and destroyed an Ottoman division that was in winter quarters at Battle of Koprukoy.

In the beginning the Russian column advanced towards Erzurum and encountered Turkish troops outside the city of Koprukoy on January 14, 1916. The Russians immediately launched attacks against the chain of Turkish forts around Koprukoy. Most of the forts were captured by the Russians on January 14, and the rest of the forts were captured by the Russians on January 15. The Turks retreated from the town, but were surrounded by Russian troops outside of Koprukoy. After three hours of intense fighting outside of Koprukoy, the Turkish troops surrendered to Russians and the Russians continued their advance on Erzurum.

Background

At four o'clock that day, with artillery fire from the 34h Division, the 102nd Regiment captured Sansor Tepe. It was to continue the battle with the 28th Division of the 9th Corps and the 18th and 34th Divisions of the 11th Corps. The 33rd Division was to advance from the south of the Aras river and then turn north, cross the river, and suddenly attack the Russian front.
