"Superman" (volume 2) or "Superman" (second series) was published from January 1987 to April 2006. 228 issues were printed: 226 monthly issues, plus issue #0 (published October 1994, between issues #93 and #94, and during the Zero Hour crossover event) and issue #1,000,000 (published November 1998, between issues #139 and #140, during the DC One Million crossover event). This series was first launched after John Byrne revamped the Superman character in 1986 in "The Man of Steel" limited series, introducing the post-"Crisis on Infinite Earths" Superman. After that limited series, "Action Comics" returned and "Superman" vol. 2, #1 was published. A new title, "Adventures of Superman" premiered with #424, continuing the numbering of the original "Superman (comic book)" series.

One of the major highlights during this series' run was The Death of Superman in "Superman" vol. 2, #75 (January 1993). Another major storyline event during this series was "For Tomorrow" published in issue #204 - #215 (June 2004 - May 2005).

"Superman" (volume 2) reached issue #226 (April 2006) and was then cancelled as part of the companywide "Infinite Crisis" storyline. "Adventures of Superman" was returned to its original title, "Superman", with issue #650 (May 2006).

One Special issue was published in 1992.

During this book's run, many comic book writers and artists worked on this series including: John Byrne, Terry Austin, Karl Kesel, Roger Stern, Jerry Ordway, Dennis Janke, Dan Jurgens, Brett Breeding, Ron Frenz, Steve Epting, Joe Rubinstein, Jeph Loeb, Ed McGuinness, Joe Kelly, Steven T. Seagle, Scott McDaniel, Brian Azzarello, Michael Turner, Talent Caldwell, Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Mark Verheiden, and Ed Benes.
