Company Background

Apparent Networks was founded in 2000 in Vancouver, British Columbia by a group of computer scientists and entrepreneurs. Although they came from very different backgrounds, the Company’s founders all had one thing in common. They knew that network performance issues often caused operational problems for medium- to large-sized organizations. They also knew that those network problems were usually difficult to locate and analyze, and expensive to fix.

The main problem the team saw was with existing network management systems. Those systems, which give lots of data about individual network devices, were incapable of providing IT teams with true, end-to-end visibility into network performance. Without that complete view from an application-traffic perspective, IT teams and network managers were not getting the information they needed to resolve network issues quickly and confidently.

Given the frequency of network performance problems, and the high costs of network downtime (including increased IT remediation costs, lost revenues and lower employee productivity), the founders saw a strong market opportunity. To capitalize on this market need, Apparent Networks focused on developing solutions that provide greater visibility into network performance, and the impact of that performance on critical business applications.

Apparent Networks develops solutions for enterprise customers in a range of market segments, and for managed service providers. Our software solutions provide customers with clear and actionable information that they can use to resolve their most complex and difficult networking challenges. By doing so, we help IT teams and their business-side constituents move from reactive to proactive network management, and from an environment of conflict and finger-pointing to one of enhanced collaboration.

Company Overview

Apparent Networks is the developer of AppCritical [formerly known as AppareNet] , a software application that provides a radically different and superior basis for assessing, measuring and diagnosing converged networks to facilitate the optimal performance and management of data, VoIP and video applications.

Utilizing a patent-protected expert technology for network behavior, the Apparent Networks AppCritical software provides network diagnostic, assessment, measurement and monitoring functionality that has proven vastly superior to that provided by the traditional network management products.

AppCritical is being used to ensure superior performance of business-critical applications deployed upon converged IP networks. Initial sales were made into the enterprise market and, then, to vendors of network-dependent applications, which are using AppCritical to quickly and efficiently identify network-based problems within their own customer deployments.

Many vendors and service providers use AppCritical to do pre-deployment network assessment and optimization to ensure their applications run smoothly over the customers' networks. With the introduction of highly fault-intolerant and demanding network applications, like VoIP and video, the role of AppCritical for pre-deployment assessment and post-deployment monitoring and diagnosis is increasing.

The introduction of real-time continuous monitoring in the 3.0 release in spring 2006 is redefining network monitoring with its unique performance-centric approach. The automated intelligence of AppCritical, which continually evaluates the network’s ability to support the enterprise’s business processes, eliminates the ongoing battle of application performance complaints and end-user angst caused by ever-changing networks.

Contrary to traditional systems, AppCritical takes network management out of a device-centric auditing view and introduces a path and application perspective which provides engineers with a course of action rather than just historical data. Its holistic approach links network performance to quality of user experience for both data and voice. Functioning in real-time, its patented testing mechanism rapidly evaluates hundreds to thousands of live paths for user-defined threshold violations. Without involvement of the network engineer, it escalates testing until it either identifies and diagnoses a problem and its location or dismisses it.

AppCritical is quickly becoming a "must have" for the professional services provider. The network assessment capability and reporting features of AppCritical provide a clear picture of the end-to-end network, eliminating costly surprises for the customer. The network assessment process presents opportunities to different types of resellers and service providers, either as standalone projects or springboards to additional work. The Apparent Networks Partner Program offers benefits tailored to suit desired levels of participation.

Apparent Networks develops and markets software that provides a unique approach to improving application performance by measuring and diagnosing live converged networks as part of pre-deployment assessment, troubleshooting and continuous real-time monitoring. The AppCritical solution provides awareness of the most critical network characteristics needed by voice, video and data applications. It has been successfully deployed by large enterprises, managed service providers and tier-one technology vendors to assure end-user quality of experience. Customers include ACS, the Boeing Company, Nortel, Toshiba, 3Com, Fujitsu, Siemens, IBM, Symantec, Bell, Hewlett-Packard, Network Appliance, TELUS and Electronic Arts.
