History

Early History

  • Football was played on a social basis in the Balaklava, Mallala, Port Wakefield and Hamley Bridge areas before the turn of the century.
  • In 1904 the Adelaide Plains Football Association was formed. Founding Clubs were Avon, Dublin, Grace Plains, Korunye and Mallala.
  • The nearby Balaklava and Port Wakefield Football Association was formed in 1909, comprising Port Wakefield, Balaklava, Owen and Werocata.
  • In 1910 the Wooroora Football Association was created.
  • Each of these Associations drew Clubs and players from the current Adelaide Plains district.
  • Wakefield Football Association teams in 1926 were Avon, Bowmans, Port Wakefield, Watchman and two Clubs out of Balaklava (Centrals and Rovers). Wooroora Association disbanded at about that time, allowing Hamley Bridge to affiliate with Adelaide Plains.
  • In 1940 Balaklava joined Adelaide Plains. The teams on the onset of War were Balaklava, Dublin, Hamley Bridge, Long Plains, Mallala and Wasleys. The Association was in Recess between 1941 and 1945 due to World War 2.

After War

  • Owen joined in 1947, a RAAF side was included from 1957 to 1960, Gawler South (today known as South Gawler) and Roseworthy were admitted in 1961. By 1964 the clubs were Balaklava, Hummocks United, United (Dublin and Long Plains), Mallala, Owen, Port Wakefield and Watchman. Hummocks United, Port Wakefield and Watchman all came from the North Western Football Association, which disbanded in 1963.
  • Since that time however, there have been quite considerable changes with respect to inclusions, withdrawals and amalgamations of Clubs.
  • Some recent inclusions have been Port Wakefield (1978), Mundoora/Wokurna (1981), Hamley Bridge (1984), Roseworthy College (1984) and Virginia (1995). Some notable departures in that time have been Two Wells and Virginia (1974), Mundoora/ Wokurna (1984). A number of factors, not least being farm rationalisation and the rural decline have necessitated a number of mergers between Clubs.
  • The eight team competition in 1996 was made up of Balaklava, Hamley Bridge, Mallala, Roseworthy College, Two Wells, Hummocks/Watchman Eagles, United and Virginia.
  • Seven clubs made up the league in 2007, with Roseworthy College missing from the 1996 complement.

Premiership History

49 premierships were decided in the 1948–1996 era, resulting in 11 different clubs experiencing the ultimate success. Mallala, Balaklava and Hummocks were far and away with the most successful, as all three teams won ten flags respectively. Hamley Bridge won five, Long Plains won four, Port Wakefield, Watchman and United two each, while Gawler South saluted the judge in 1961 and Two Wells in 1987. In the twelve years since 1996 Hummocks/Watchman Eagles have won a further five flags, 2001, 2003, 2008 including back to back in 2005/06, Balaklava won in 1999/2000, Mallala 1997 and 2007, Virginia 1998, United 2002, and Hamley Bridge in 2004.
