Aston Rowant railway station

Aston Rowant railway station

Aston Rowant railway station was opened in 1872 and was a part of the Watlington and Princes Risborough Railway. From Watlington station, it was the second station on the line in between Lewknor Bridge halt. The station was closed to passengers on 1 June 1957 and to goods in January 1961. The station site was under the A40, where a bridge took the road over the line. The station site now is overgrown yet a flat concrete surface is visible and the track bed is still visible in undergrowth at the end of the flat area.

The Site Today

The site now appears to be a path through the woods. [http://disused-rlys.fotopic.net/p27441909.html] An area where some remains may be covered is near the edge where the earth is piled high with little undergrowth. Also the bridge remains but is covered to road level but is still visible (the site position is just before the B4009 road meets the A40 at the bottom of the hill near the M40. When coming down the hill from Stokenchurch, the site is immediately to the right after you pass Icknield Way).
