Korean Unification Flag

North Korea competed as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.

Both North Korea and South Korea marched together in the Parade of Nations at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies under the Korean Unification Flag, a white flag showing the united Korean peninsula in blue. They had two flagbearers carrying the flag together at each occasion, one representing the North and the other representing the South. The female athletes and staff wore red blazers, while their male counterparts wore blue. Although they marched together, the teams competed separately and had separate medal tallies.

Athletics

All four members of the North Korea athletics team were marathoners, with the top performance coming from Jong Yong-Ok, who finished 21st.

Boxing

Kim Song-Guk was a surprise finalist in the Featherweight class, beating the European bronze medalist in the second round and the All-Africa Games silver medalist in the quarters before edging World runner-up and European champion Vitali Tajbert in the semifinals. In the final, Tichtchenko pulled out into an early lead over Kim and never looked back, easily taking victory and leaving Kim to the silver medal.

Diving

All four North Korean divers competed in the 10 metre event, with the two men qualifying for the semifinals, while the two women were eliminated in the preliminaries. Both men scored had top-12 scores in the semifinal, but because qualification for the final was based on the total score from the first two rounds, their lower preliminary scores prevented them from qualifying.

Gymnastics

Artistic

The eight-athlete team entered by North Korea in Gymnastics was its largest in any single sport, thanks to the women's team qualifying for the Games. Neither male athlete managed to make a final, but two women did make three finals between them, with Kang Yun-Mi finishing 5th in the vault and Pyon Kwang-Sun making the all-around and uneven bars finals. In the uneven bars final, Pyon had the best finish for the team, ending in 4th place, just four-hundredths of a point from a medal. The team finished last overall in qualification, primarily due to poor showings on the beam and the floor, where they were last by more than a full point.

Judo

The North Korean judo team put up a 10-9 record in Athens, with four of the wins coming from two-time World Champion Kye Sun-Hui. Kye, who had won a gold medal in Atlanta and a bronze in Sydney, made her way to the final in Athens, where she lost a tight match to a German opponent. Although she failed to win gold, she did manage to complete her Olympic medal collection.

Shooting

North Korean shooters made three finals, and managed to come up with a medal. Kim Jong-Su and Kim Hyon-Ung both made the 10 metre air pistol final, but neither shot strongly enough to challenge for a medal. Kim Jong-Su also made the 50 metre pistol final, but here shot well enough to earn a bronze medal. Ri Hyon-Ok came very close to the women's skeet final, just missing out in a shoot-off.

The North Korean tennis team went 8-5, with its biggest success coming not from one of the two seeds, but from world #40 Kim Hyang-Mi, who beat three seeded players on her way to the final. This included upsetting the 3rd seed Niu Jianfeng in the 4th round and stirring comeback from down three-sets-to-one against a Singaporean opponent in the semifinal, before falling to the #1 seed in the final.

North Korean weightlifters came home with a silver medal, after Ri Song-Hui, who was tied for second entering the Clean & Jerk, made a successful lift at 130.0 kg to pull away into a lone silver medal position.
