John Marburger

Dr. John Harmen Marburger, III (born February 8, 1941) is an American physicist who is the current Science Advisor to the President and the Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the administration of President George W. Bush.

Marburger was born in Staten Island, New York and grew up in Maryland. He attended Princeton University, graduating in 1962 with a B.A. in Physics, followed by a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Stanford University in 1967. After completing his education he served as a professor of Physics and Electrical Engineering at the University of Southern California, later becoming chairman of the physics department and Dean of the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. In 1980 he left USC to became president of SUNY Stony Brook, leading that university until 1994, during which time it became the university with the most federal funding in the northeastern United States.

He later served as trustee of Princeton University.
