"Caso cerrado" ("Closed Case") is a Latin American, Spanish language, television program broadcast by Telemundo in which Cuban-born judge Ana María Polo arbitrates cases for volunteer participants. The show began in February 2002 as "Sala de Parejas" ("Couple's Court") and was renamed in April 2006.

On each show, Polo usually considers two or three different cases between conflicting guests and attempts to resolve them as an arbiter. She does not function a judge but an arbiter to settle differences between the guests or litigants.

The guests are all volunteers and are required to sign contracts before appearing which legally obligates them to accept Polo's decisions.

A show broadcast in the beginning of 2008 about a man who raped a boy dead by a missing bullet, the man is a known artist in Puerto Rico and as per request of his managers, he presented a good behavior certificate showing that he raped no child. He also stated that he asked the producer that he wanted to participate in Caso Cerrado and was hired to play the part of the original man who committed the crime. Caso Cerrado with, Dra. Ana Maria Polo educates, entertains and helps millions of people daily not only in the United States, but also, in Central and South America, as in the Caribbean and Europe. Through YouTube people all over the world see it as well. As of June 23, 2008 Televisa in Mexico has begun airing the daily for 2 hours from 4:00 to 6:00pm daily.

Caso Cerrado has a disclaimer at the end of the show that states, "some cases may have been dramatized, etc.." La Dra. Polo as she is referred to in the show, has always stated that some of the cases have been dramatized, however she never knows which cases are dramatized and which are not. If she feels they are acting she will kick them out of the court.

Litigants Get Compensated to Appear

It is widely held as a fact that People's Court, Caso Cerrado and other similar tv programs compensate participants who agree to appear. In some cases, money compensation may range from $400 to $600 for English language programs but only $100 to $200 for Spanish language programs. Added to the money offered for litigants to appear, other incentives are given: Limosine trips to/from the studio where the show is taped, airline tickets to Miami or the city where the "hearing" is held, plus meals and hotel accomodations. In theory if the defendant loses on a $600 claim (Or "Demanda", a commonly used term in Spanish) at a televised hearing where she will probably be repeatedly insulted by the judge (Judge Maria Polo emulates Judge Judy by belittling litigants), she will probably receive more than $1000 in incentives anyway. Therefore most litigants are expected at all times to dramatize or exagerate their own defense or counter-claim in court. In summary, these defendants and plaintiffs are technically improvised actors portraying their own soap opera style,life dramas just seeking to be famous for a few minutes. That is why, the idea that "justice" is upheld in these televised court cases leaves many doubts.
