American Geological Institute

The American Geological Institute (AGI) is a nonprofit federation of 44 geoscientific and professional associations that represents more than 100,000 geologists, geophysicists, and other earth scientists. Founded in 1948, AGI provides information services to geoscientists, serves as a voice of shared interests in the profession, plays a major role in strengthening geoscience education, and strives to increase public awareness of the vital role the geosciences play in society's use of resources and interaction with the environment.

AGI's staff provides professional and information services related to government affairs; earth-science education, outreach, human resources, and scholarships; the bibliographic database, [http://www.agiweb.org/georef/index.html GeoRef] , and its Document Delivery Service; and the monthly newsmagazine, [http://www.geotimes.org/current/ Geotimes] , and other publications. A Member Society Council and an Executive Committee, elected by the Council, govern AGI. The Member Society Council meets twice a year in conjunction with the annual meetings of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and the Geological Society of America. The AGI Foundation, a Finance Committee, and advisory committees provide financial, policy, and program support to the Institute.

Government Affairs Program

The Government Affairs Program at AGI offers summer and semester internship opportunities for geoscience students with an interest in public policy and in how Washington impacts the geoscience community. Interns gain a first-hand understanding of the legislative process and the operation of executive branch agencies. They also hone writing, research, and web publishing skills.

AGI offices are located at 4220 King Street in Alexandria, Virginia.

Earth Science Week Program

Earth Science Week is AGI's premier public outreach effort. Since October 1998, the American Geological Institute has organized this national and international event to help the public gain a better understanding and appreciation for the Earth Sciences and to encourage stewardship of the Earth.
