Wilhelm Lehmbruck (*
January 4 1881 inDuisburg , †March 25 1919 inBerlin ) was a German sculptor.Biography
He studied sculpture arts at the academy of arts in
Düsseldorf and contributed to an exhibition at the Grand Palais inParis . He came to move to Paris in 1910. DuringWorld War I he served as aparamedic at a military hospital in Berlin. He suffered from severe depressions and fled the war by going toZürich . After the war he returned to Berlin. In 1919 he committedsuicide distressed by his ongoing state of depression.Sculptures
Lehmbrucks sculptures mostly concentrate on the
human body and are influenced by Naturalism andExpressionism . Most of his sculptures express agony and the feeling of misery, they are usually made up as anonymous figures and there are no visible individual facial features.
