Prince August, Duke of Dalarna

Prince August, Duke of Dalarna

Prince Carl Nikolaus August, Duke of Dalarna of the Royal House of Bernadotte (August 24 1831 - March 4 1873) was the youngest of the five issue of King Oscar I of Sweden and Josephine of Leuchtenberg. He married Princess Therese Amalie von Sachsen-Altenburg, or Saxe-Altenburg, Duchess of Saxony [http://www.geocities.com/henrivanoene/gensweden.html Henri van Oene's Royal Genealogies] ] , daughter of Prince Eduard of Saxe-Altenburg. The marriage did not produce issue. [http://www.thepeerage.com/p10564.htm#i105635 The Peerage # 105635] ]

Born in Drottningholm Palace, his eldest sibling was King Carl XV of Sweden. On 16 April 1864 in Altenburg, the Duke married Princess Therese of Saxe-Altenburg, eldest daughter of Prince Eduard of Saxe-Altenburg. In Sweden, his wife was styled "Princess Theresia." Princess Theresia died at Haga Palace, Stockholm, 9 November 1914.

The Prince was very interested in trains and locomotives, and a locomotive was named after him. Since it was commonly known the Prince was not so very bright this led to the expression "dummare än tåget", (literally translated "more stupid than the train"), an expression still in use in the Swedish languague, although it is not very commonly known anymore that it is actually derived from a Prince of the Royal House in the 19th century.

Prince Carl Nikolaus August died at the age of 41 in the Royal Palace of Stockholm.
