Sofar bomb

Sofar bomb

The sofar bomb is a long-range position-fixing system that uses explosive sounds in the deep sound channel of the ocean. A fix is determined from the differences in arrival times, at known geographic positions, of a signal that is sent from any given point. The useful range from the signal source to the monitor stations can exceed 3,000 miles.

The term itself is an acronym for SOund Fixing And Ranging.
