Nihongo|"Please Save My Earth"|ぼくの地球を守って|Boku no Chikyū o Mamotte, sometimes abbreviated "Bokutama", is a shōjo science fiction manga by Saki Hiwatari. It was published by Hakusensha from 1987 to 1994 in "Hana to Yume" and collected in 21 tankōbon volumes. The series was adapted as a six-part anime OVA in 1993. It is about seven teenagers who share common dreams about their past lives as alien scientists who observed the Earth from the Moon.

Both the anime OVA and manga are licensed for distribution in North America by Viz Media. The translation of the last volume of the manga was published in March 2007. However the anime movie and image video collection are only available in region 2/Japan.

A sequel manga, "Boku o Tsutsumu Tsuki no Hikari" ("The Moonlight That Embraces Me"), is currently being serialized in the bimonthly "Hana to Yume" as well as the special edition magazine, "Hana to Yume Plus".

Plot

The story centers around high school student Alice Sakaguchi, her seven-year old neighbor Rin Kobayashi, and five other teenage students who have recurring collective dreams about a group of alien scientists stationed on the moon observing and collecting data about the Earth.

Initially, when Alice learns that fellow classmates Jinpachi and Issei have been having common recurring dreams since middle school, she thinks nothing of it until she has one of these "moon dreams" herself. Because of the nature of these dreams, the way Issei always dreams as the same person, and Jinpachi as well, now that Alice has provided a third perspective, they start to believe that people who dream as the other four scientists in their "moon dreams" can each be found.

Almost like it's a game, the three make plans to seek these other people out in the hopes of making sense of these dreams. After a suggestion from Issei, and a little bit of time and luck, they are finally able to make contact with the other four people. But as the six teenagers and one child start to piece together the timeline and content of their dreams, they began to realize that their "dreams" are not simply dreams, but rather suppressed memories of their past incarnations (as those same moon scientists) that ended tragically. And now, as their "game" begins to unravel, the kids must strive to come to terms with what happened in their past lives, as they struggle to prevent their past incarnations' rivalries, jealousies, and dubious actions from taking over their new ones.

Differences between the Anime and the Manga

Content

The OVA covers the most ground as far as the manga is concerned, but still falls far short of including even half of the content from the manga. Manga volumes 1 - 8, which comprise the setup of the whole story in the modern-day Tokyo setting, up to and including the psychic battle with Rin and Rin's dreams from Shion's childhood, are well represented in the OVA, although not to utter completeness. Other important content that was included in the OVA is as follows. The OVA also includes some scenes between Issei and Jinpachi, and Issei and Sakura from manga volume 11. Further, the scenes from the OVA of Shion's last few days with Mokuren on the moon base come from volume 11 of the manga. Shukaido's memories of administering the vaccine to Shion come from manga volume 14, as well as the scenes of Alice hallucinating at the temple in Kyoto, causing her to faint, which in turn causes the cherry trees to bloom out of season. Lastly, all of the depressing scenes between Shion and Mokuren while alone on the moon base, as well as the scene where Mokuren sends her spirit to save Rin from his fall, come from the very end of volume 19 and the very beginning of volume 20 of the manga.

The movie adds only a very short symbolic scene from volume 21 of the manga where Rin is on the moon base and all of the other reincarnations show up with him to help him step forward into his new life as Rin and away from his past life, Shioncite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 21 | year=2007 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421508370 | chapter= |pages=110-111] cite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 21 | year=2007 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421508370 | chapter= |pages=135-143] . New scenes in the movie that were not taken from the manga show an adult Alice meeting up with an adult Rin in a park at the very end of the movie.

Compared to the movie, the Image Video Collection adds quite a bit of new content from the manga. Issei's continuous struggle throughout the manga to deal with Enju's feelings toward Gyokuran are expressed in the image video "Moon Light Anthem ~Enju 1991~". In the image video "Mikadzuki no Shindai", Mokuren's unhappy childhood is explored to a small degreecite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 15 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421503263 | chapter= |pages=26-69] cite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 15 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421503263 | chapter= |pages=109-165] . "Ring", by contrast, is a very trimmed-down, context-lacking version of the ending to the manga (vol 21) that was never shown in the OVA, involving why Rin was collecting passwords and why he needed Tokyo Towercite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 21 | year=2007 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421508370 | chapter= |pages=95-143] . "Prologue ~kiniro no toki nagarete~" shows Mokuren's final time singing as a Kiches Sarjalian on Shia, with the other scientists present, just before they all leave for the moon base. One big difference about this one is that the image video version shows Shion as being present, when in the manga it is mentioned several times that Shion was in fact "not" present for this eventcite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 16 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421505495 | chapter= |pages=85-94] .

Characterization

The manga and anime also differ on their presentation of several of the characters. Alice is shown in the anime as being very weak-willed and demure without giving her the needed screen-time from later in the manga where it is explained that she is simply being a lot more careful than the others of allowing her past life to take over her current one. After she finally allows Mokuren's memories to return to her, she several times makes quite a stand against Shion while he is dominating Rincite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 11 | year=2005 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1591168465 | chapter= |pages=68-72] cite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 21 | year=2007 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421508370 | chapter= |pages=8-14] cite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 21 | year=2007 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421508370 | chapter= |pages=90-93] .

Shion, as well, is largely misrepresented by the anime, due to its cherry-picking of plot and scenes from Shion's past. The anime portrays Shion as a somewhat quiet and antisocial love interest for Mokuren with a bad childhood. In their last days alone together on the moon base, Shion is depicted in the anime as being incredibly devoted to her. The manga, however, sheds a completely different light on Shion's character by expanding his backstory to include his time at college with Gyokuran and Shukaido, as well as his forcible assignment to the ZKK-101 missioncite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 8 | year=2004 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1591162718 | chapter= |pages=146-149] cite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 9 | year=2005 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1591162726 | chapter= |pages=42-52] . Additionally, the manga includes a plethora of extra scenes from the moon base from the time the scientists arrive, their normal daily activities and problems, as well as when the Homeworld is destroyed and the virus starts spreading. All of these additional scenes paint a completely different picture of Shion -- namely that he is a conceited, rude and cruel sociopath who will stop at nothing to destroy Gyokuran's unwavering spiritcite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 16 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421505495 | chapter= |pages=100-108] cite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 16 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421505495 | chapter= |pages=169-181] cite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 9 | year=2005 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1591162726 | chapter= | pages=154-175] cite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 10 | year=2005 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1591162734 | chapter= |pages=120-159] . It is not clear until the very end of the manga whether or not Shion loved Mokuren in their last days on the mooncite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 20 | year=2007 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421505533 | chapter= | pages=124-142] . This seemingly trivial unknown ends up becoming a severely aggravating factor in the attempts of the reincarnations to stop Rin/Shion at the end of the manga, making the anime's careless mix of "happy" scenes of the two together very misleading.

The largest difference in characterization in the anime is Mokuren's character. In the anime, Mokuren is depicted as an angelic, kind, and benevolent individual who is loved by all and loves everyone in return. In the reality of the manga, Mokuren is a selfish, disagreeable, irreverent, and unhappy person who despises her Kiches power and to some degree the Sarjalim faith that destroyed her childhoodcite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 15 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421503263 | chapter= | pages=55-59] cite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 15 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421503263 | chapter= |pages=97-103] . Men seem to fall in love with her at the drop of a hat, the women in her life despise her for this, which makes her incredibly bittercite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 16 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421505495 | chapter= | pages=14-21] cite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 16 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421505495 | chapter= |pages=51] . Despite this less-than-angelic view of Mokuren, she is not portrayed as a bad person in the manga like Shion is, since when it came down to her test of moral integrity, Mokuren couldn't go through with itcite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 19 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421505525 | chapter= | pages=133-143] . All of the scenes of Alice's multi-book flashback to Mokuren's rather broken childhood are left out of the anime, except in the image video "Mikadzuki no Shindai".Further, the relationship between Shion and Mokuren in the anime is shown to be nothing more or less than loving. In reality, this is only true toward the end of their time on the moon base together, and only superficially, as depicted in the mangacite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 19 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421505525 | chapter= | pages=45-57] . The first time Shion beheld Mokuren in the manga he was in awe at the unfairness of how someone as perfect and unmarred as Mokruen could be allowed to existcite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 9 | year=2005 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1591162726 | chapter= |pages=93-97] . From this point on, Shion goes out of his way to mistreat Mokuren at any opportunity, usually either ignoring her when she is trying to pay attention to him, yelling at her quite rudely about trivial things, and tormenting her by playing pranks on her designed to make her cry. Compounding this, Gyokuran appears to be completely in love with Mokuren, and Mokuren seems to get along well with Gyokuran, making Shion all the more angry and determined to ruin both of them. Finally, Shion makes his move, causing Gyokuran to become insanely furious, and Mokuren to become incredibly depressed, although she does so behind a kind smilecite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 19 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421505525 | chapter= | pages=15-43] . The scenes of Shion and Mokuren together alone on the moon base are at a time when neither of them believes the other loves them, but the anime makes it seem like there was never any question about their mutual love. This uncertainty between the two is used to severely complicate the second half of the manga, all the way to the denouement.

Lastly, the torment that Issei goes through due to Enju's love for Gyokuran, and Issei's current state of being the same gender as Enju's former love interest, Jinpachi, is only touched upon in the anime. Later, when the group meets up with Sakura and Daisuke, the manga depicts quite a few scenes between Issei and Sakura (Shusuran was Enju's best friend), usually Sakura advising Issei on what to do about Jinpachi, somewhat reprising her role as Enju's best friend. As more and more of these scenes between Issei and Sakura are shown, as well as multiple flashbacks to the moon base on through Sakura/Shusuran's eyes, it becomes quite clear that Shusuran was in love with Enju to whatever degree is allowed by the culture that the scientists come from (although Enju never seemed to notice)cite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 17 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421505509 | chapter= | pages=33-69] . And now that Enju has been reincarnated as a male, Sakura finds herself more and more drawn to him, despite all of her flippant attitude and gruffness towards Issei's problemscite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 11 | year=2005 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1591169879 | chapter= | pages=129-147] . The anime left out nearly all of this romantic side plot.

Plotwise, the anime focuses solely on the minor plot of Shukaido's actions against Shion on the moon base, when the true rivalry of the story is between Gyokuran and Shion. Shion's need to get the passwords is never fully explained in the anime even though it appears as a minor sub-plot. Everything in the manga after the psychic battle and Rin's flashback to Shion's childhood (manga volume 8) is almost completely ignored. The anime ends with scenes of Rin as a child enjoying the new world he has been born into and the brief flashback Alice has near the end of the manga (volumes 19-20) of when Mokuren sends her spirit into the future to save Rin from his 15-story fall.

The manga, however, continues the plot after Rin goes to the hospital and later escapes, goes into hiding, and continues pressing people for the passwords. Eventually, in the final scenes of the manga, Rin is able to resolve the main plot line of the story, his need for the passwords and Tokyo Tower. This ending was shown somewhat in the anime image video "Ring" as mentioned above, but without context, it is largely meaningless.

Background

History

; Homeworld : The original home of the people who populate all of Tess, Shia, Seda and Kaya. Of the colonized planets, the Homeworld is the largest astral body and is the closest to the sun. In history it says that the Homeworld grew to capacity and could no longer support the excessive amount of lives upon it, and so, in response, their race expanded out in the galaxy, colonizing other moons and planets. In the process of doing so, the native peoples of the colonized planets were converted to the Sarjalim faith. Years after the colonization, there was a cataclysm on the Homeworld, forcing its inhabitants to flee, mostly to Shia, the largest of the colonized planets. After the Homeworld stabilized, everyone from all the colonized bodies tried to return to the newly reborn and quite lush Homeworld, resulting in a great war between the coloniescite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 8 | year=2004 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1591162718 | chapter= |pages=80-86] . The society that inhabits all of these astral bodies seems to be some sort of Theocracy based on the Sarjalim faithcite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 8 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421503263| chapter= |pages=35-43] cite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 14 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421501937 | chapter= |pages=173] .

; Tess: Tess is the larger and more distant of the two moons of the Homeworld, and the only inhabitable one. It was the first to be colonized after the Homeworld became unable to support the overpopulated human civilization. Being its moon, Tess was able to observe the stabilization of the Homeworld and its lush rebirth by the grace of Sarjalim after the cataclysm that forced the remaining population to flee. Tess reported this information back to the other colonized planets, inadvertently throwing them into a bloody civil war over who deserved the newfound resources of the Homeworld. In this war, Seda attacked Tess first, which created the miserable state of bloody civil war on Tess in which Shion was born. After he was found, Shion was taken to Shia.

; Shia: The largest of the colonized planets and the farthest from the sun. Shia is allied with Kaya to defend Tess during this bloody civil war over the lush new resources of the Homeworld after its glorious rebirth. This colony is where Shion is taken after he is discovered on Tess as a child, covered in blood, with dead bodies all around him. This is where he meets La Zlo, Kyaa, Liam Karsh, Gyokuran, Shukaido, and Kyaa Junior and also where he continues to live during and after college until he is forcibly assigned to the ZKK-101 mission due to his bad behaviorcite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 8 | year=2004 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1591162718 | chapter= |pages=92-93] cite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 8 | year=2004 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1591162718 | chapter= |pages=104-108] .

; Seda: Following Shia in size, Seda is the next farthest from the sun after Shia. After the Homeworld was reborn by the grace of Sarjalim, Seda invaded the moon, Tess, in an attempt to claim the new, lush Homeworld for themselves. This is the war during which Shion is born and rescued.

; Kaya: The smallest of the planets, Kaya is the next planet in line from the sun, after the homeworld. Kaya joined Shia in the fight to defend Tess.

; KK: Various places in the universe are scouted out as potentially colonizable astral bodies, and Earth is one of them; KK is the code-name they gave to itcite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 15 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421503263 | chapter= |pages=177-184] . : Mokuren first sees a 3D holographic image of Earth when she is a child, still imprisoned in "Paradise", and remarks that it is beautiful, the color of her father's tears. Over and over again Mokuren makes this comparison. Because it reminds her of her father, she vows she will visit it some day no matter what the state sayscite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 16 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421503263| chapter= |pages=80-89] . Later, when grown, Mokuren submits her request and expects the state and the Elder to put up a fight since she, as a Kiches, is considered a national treasure. But when the Elder approves her request, she is baffled, but excited. It is at this time that the Elder gives Mokuren her second prophecy, that she will be reborn somehowcite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 16 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421503263| chapter= |pages=46-55] . ;ZKK-101: This is the code-name for earth's moon. The moon base has been in place for a while, and has had at least one other set of scientists previously. Shion notes the ZKK-101 base is an ancient piece of junk, with very old technology; he is constantly having to repair issues with the computers and other systems on the base, even aside from Mokuren's singing and the weeds.

; Passwords: In order to utilize the more powerful capabilities of the moon base, each of the seven scientists must be in unanimous agreement that this course of action is the correct one. ; Sarches: Sarches are people with psychic gifts as bestowed by the goddess Sarjalim. Of the seven scientists, five have Sarches powers: Shion, Gyokuran, Shukaido, Enju and Mokuren. Of those, Shion, Gyokuran, and Shukaido are standard Sarches (albeit poweful ones) with multiple and varying psychic powers, while Enju only has a minor psychic gift of Telepathycite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 3 | year=2004 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1591161428 | chapter= |pages=46-47] . Mokuren, on the other hand, is a special type of Sarches, a Kiches Sarjalian. While Sarches in general are stated as being rare, the Kiches Sarjalians subgroup of Sarches are even far more rare, and, for this reason, Mokuren is typically referred to as a Kiches Sarjalian instead of a Sarches. There are no distinguising marks which identify a Sarches unless the Sarches is a Kiches Sarjalian.

; Kiches Sarjalian: Kiches Sarjalians are a very special subset of Sarches that are incredibly rare, one in 100 million, and are revered by the people and the state alike as avatars of the goddess Sarjalim. These Kiches have powers of empathy, growth, and rebirth. Low level Kiches can speak with plants, and sing to make them grow, while older and more experienced Kiches can speak/empathize with animals and even heal them. These unique and specific powers, as well as their holiness, is how Kiches differ from Sarches.: Kiches are denoted by the red four-petal marking upon their forehead. In order for a Kiches to retain their powers, they must remain virgins. At some point while they live in Paradise, a Kiches will receive a prophesy from the current Elder of the Kiches Sarjalian to better help direct their course in life. Additionally, most Kiches Sarjalians are female, 98% in fact, and those that are born male are not long for this world, frequently dying quite young, as Mokuren's dad did when he was in his 20s or 30scite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 9 | year=2005 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1591162726 | chapter= |pages=133] .: At the young age of three, a Kiches child is taken from their parents and placed into a state-controlled facility called "Paradise", where they will live, naked and alone except for other Kiches, until they are 20 years of age. To compensate for the rather abrupt and insensitive wresting of the child away from the arms of its parents, any parents of a Kiches child are set for life by government subsidy. A person can become quite wealthy from being blessed with a Kiches child and willingly giving it up to the state.: The Kiches, however, are the result of a random mutation of genes; it is not hereditary. Because of this, there is no way to predict who a Kiches child will be born to, and no way to instigate a breeding program in order to produce Kiches. This is why they remain rare; only the goddess herself grants the honor of being a Kiches to any particular child born under her purview. : All of this together is what makes Mokuren's situation so baffling. While a Kiches born to a non-blessed family is one in 100 million (10^8), one born to not one, but TWO Kiches parents is as rare as one in 10^23. And despite its rarity, Mokuren despises her Kiches status, making her quite the bitter and disagreeable youth. The other Kiches and Lians are aghast at her irreverent and bold behavior. All except the Elder. Yet as Mokuren sees it, her Kiches destroyed her family and ruined her life, and she vows at quite a young age to get rid of it at all costs. And the one way she knows how to get rid of it her parents taught her... get married and lose her virginitycite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 15 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421503263 | chapter= |pages=104-109] . And so, she goes forth into her life, with this idea in mind...

; Paradise: Paradise is the state-controlled facility of forest and gardens, where Kiches are taken at the age of three to live naked and sheltered from the outside world, until the age of 20. Here they are trained to be full Kiches Sarjalians, learning to sing the verses from the Kisando. Mokuren, as well has her parents, have all spent time here.

; Black Hymn: Kiches Sarjalians, as great holy figures, are taught to sing the verses of the Kisando, the holy text of the Sarjalim faith. These songs make plants grow very quickly, as Mokuren illustrated several times on the moon base by overrunning the whole thing with weeds just overnight. There is, however one song known as the "Black Hymn" that is taught by oral tradition only, which causes plants to die ("go dormant"). It is believed that the cataclysm that forced everyone to flee the Homeworld so long ago was caused by the Kiches singing this song. On the moon base, after the Homeworld is destroyed, Mokuren deems it safe to tell this information to Shion, even though it is the biggest kept secret of the Kiches Sarjalianscite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 19 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421505525 | chapter= |pages=143-153] . After their reincarnation on Earth, it is this song that Shion wants Mokuren to use in order to cause a similar cataclysm on Earth, followed naturally by the songs of growth from the Kisando in order to build the world anewcite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 20 | year=2007 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421505533| chapter= | pages=75-93] .

Characters

The seven reincarnations

The reincarnations are six teenagers and a seven-year-old boy living in the Tokyo area in 1991.

; nihongo|Alice Sakaguchi|坂口亜梨子|Sakaguchi Arisu anime voices|Yuri Shiratori|Lalainia Lindbjerg: Reincarnation of: Mokuren: A shy, quiet highschooler who recently moved to Tokyo from a town in Hokkaidō, which she misses for its peace and lack of pollution. When we first meet Alice she is being teased and mocked by the boy next door, Rin Kobayashi. She retains Mokuren's ability to talk to plants, and make plants grow by singing to them. Despite Rin's encouragement, Alice is having a hard time remembering her life as a scientist. This is because she is afraid of losing current herself in Mokuren's memories and also because she feels that she, as Alice, could never live up to the others' expectations of Mokuren. This refusal on Alice's part to continue her moon dreaming comes to a head when she decides to stop joining the other reincarnates for their after school meetings, and instead joins the school choir. At this point even the other reincarnates begin doubting that she is the reincarnation of Mokuren, especially given that she has only had one moon dream. All of them, that is, except for Jinpachi and Rin.

; nihongo|Rin Kobayashi|小林輪|Kobayashi Rin anime voices|Yumi Touma|Christopher Turner: Reincarnation of: Shion: Rin is the seven year old neighbor (aging to eight during the series) of Alice Sakaguchi, and has enjoyed tormenting her since she moved in next door. Despite this, Alice is forced to babysit him one day, and at the end of the day the two get into a childish argument over Jinpachi, who they happened to run into while out. In order to anger Alice, Rin grabs the crocus they bought that day and drops it from the fifteenth story balcony onto the ground. Alice slaps Rin in retaliation, causing him to lose his grip on the railing and fall from the fifteen-story balcony of the apartment. Incredulously, he managed to survive the fall but lapsed into a coma. It is during this coma that Rin has a relives almost all of Shion's memories in an incredibly compacted amount of time.: After awaking from his coma, Rin begins a plan to communicate with the moonbase using Tokyo Tower. In 1991, Tokyo Tower was being renovated, and Rin used his psychic powers to threaten the contractors into using his blueprints for the renovations. The design would turn Tokyo Tower into a large radio transmitter, capable of broadcasting to the moon. In order to activate the systems in the moonbase he needs everyone's passwords. Through blackmail and deception, Rin slowly begins to collect these passwords.: Rin also manipulates his his overly-indulgent mother into securing him an engagement to Alice, using Alice's role in his fall from the balcony as blackmail. Later, he tried to force Alice's awakening as Mokuren since he is positive that Alice "is" Mokuren, despite her vehement denial. Like the other reincarnates, he desperately wants Alice to regain her memories so she can tell him her password to the moon base computer (which, ironically, is Shion's own name). Alice's first "moon dream" was caused by a telepathic signal that Rin sent into her mind. The process that Rin used was called "Synergetic Cascade" on the moon scientists' homeworld. When he cast the signal, however, he only supplied visual information. He expected Alice to fill in the sounds (which she did) because Mokuren would remember the conversation that took place. : Interestingly enough, Rin bears no physical resemblance to Shion. He actually looks like Shukaido, with whom he was obsessed with when he died. He uses this to his advantage by convincing by the others that he is Shukaido and not Shion. This lends a great deal of dramatic irony to the series, and allows Rin to easily manipulate the other reincarnates.

; nihongo|Jinpachi Ogura|小椋迅八|Ogura Jinpachi anime voices|Toshiyuki Morikawa|Tony Sampson: Reincarnation of: Gyokuran : His character description in the English manga compares him to Clark Kent. It should be noted though that, like Gyokuran, he is emotionally immature, preferring to act immediately instead of taking a moment to think about his actions before he does them. He rudely (unintentionally so) rebuffs Issei's advances without a second thought and also later torments Issei by telling him how he has fallen deeply in love with Alice. Jinpachi and Issei are the first reincarnated moon characters that Alice and Rin encounter.: Jinpachi is the only character who closely resembles his former incarnation. Aside from the way they part their hair, Gyokuran and Jinpachi are virtually identical. He also retains the power to use "ki" (energy) blasts, and this is first shown when he uses this ki to defeat a group of thugs.

; nihongo|Issei Nishikiyori|錦織一成|Nishikiyori Issei anime voices|Ryotaro Okiayu|Mark Hildreth: Reincarnation of: Enju: He was reborn in a male body because he believed that he could be closer to Gyokuran's next incarnation if they were both males (without the drama of a heterosexual relationship). Issei retains Enju's powers of telepathy. This telepathy caused Jinpachi to start having the moon dreams as well--and it also means that Issei and Jinpachi have the same dreams every night. The close friendship between Enju and Shushuran lasts two lifetimes. When Sakura and Issei meet in the real world, they become best friends once again. Sakura is desperate for Issei to get over his unrequited love for Jinpachi and move on. At the end of the manga, the two of them become engaged.: Naturally, Issei doesn't physically resemble his former incarnation, Enju, although strangely enough, Sakura does.

; nihongo|Sakura Kokushou|国生桜|Kokushō Sakura anime voices|Naoko Matsui|Myriam Sirois: Reincationation of: Shusuran: Sakura started having moon dreams around the same time as the others. Sakura attends the same school as Daisuke. They discover each other during a near-fatal traffic accident while on a field trip. Sakura screamed for Sarjalim to save her as the bus was in an uncontrolled skid. Sarjalim was the goddess that the moon scientists worshipped. Daisuke heard this and realized that they had been having the same dreams.: Sakura physically resembles Enju. Shusuran had short red hair, and Sakura confessed that she always wished that she had Enju's thick, lustrous hair.

; nihongo|Haruhiko Kazama|笠間春彦|Kazama Haruhiko anime voices|Kappei Yamaguchi|Jason Gray-Stanford: Reincarnation of: Shukaido: Unlike Sakura and Daisuke, Haruhiko does not see the advertisement in "Boo!" magazine. Rin runs into him in a uniform store and realizes who he is. Haruhiko is racked with guilt over the terrible thing he did to Shion in his previous life. As such he does everything that Rin tells him, including claiming that he is the reincarnation of Shion. This turns out to be an inspired move. Between Rin's machinations and the their piecing together of their moon memories, the other reincarnates begin to fear Haruhiko and what he may be doing to them, even though Haruhiko has not actually done a single thing to any of them.: Haruhiko has a very weak heart, due to his exessive use of his ESP when he was younger. Haruhiko resembles Shion physically, because Shukaido was obsessed with him when he died. This explained when Haruhiko mentions that his mother is half indian (making Haruhiko 3/4 Japanese and 1/4 Indian)cite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 5 | year=2004 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1591162688 | chapter= | pages=65-66] . At the end of the manga, he becomes a writer.

; nihongo|Daisuke Dobashi|土橋大介|Dobashi Daisuke anime voices|Nobuo Tobita|Ted Cole: Reincarnation of: Hiiragi: Chronologically speaking, he started having the moon dreams first, as he started having them when he was seven (Rin recovered his memories at an even younger age, but at a later time, since Rin is much younger than Daisuke).: Daisuke spends very little time on panel in the manga, so not much is known about him. However he does not trust Haruhiko, whom he believes to be Shion. He is also the only one who realizes the danger that collecting all of the passwords would pose, making it much more difficult for Rin to collect them all.

The seven past lives

The scientists are aliens sent to obverve the Earth from a station on the Moon, some time in the 1970s.

; Mokuren anime voices|Emi Shinohara|Ellen Kennedy: Reincarnated as: Alice Sakaguchi: Mokuren was the team's biologist. She was a gorgeous woman with long blonde hair. All of the male scientists except Shion fell in love with her after attending her final performance as a Kiches Sarjalian on Shia, before leaving for ZKK-101. She has been obsessed with Earth since her childhood and longed to live among the humans she observed. Mokuren was a special and extremely rare subset of Sarches, psychics, known as a "Kiches Sarjalian". Kiches are blessed with the gifts of growth by the goddess Sarjalim. The word "Kiche" is used to refer to the mark on her forehead, which consists of four red dots. A Kiches powers manifest themselves as plant empathy and plant growth through song at a young age, and eventually even human empathy and healing at a very old age and high level of experience. Mokuren's plant growth abilities are displayed on the moon base several times when Shion torments Mokuren, sending her off to console herself by singing to the plants in the greenhouse. This singing then causes the entire moon base to sprout weeds over night, ironically destroying Shion's computers in the process, which he then must fix, making him even more frustrated with Mokuren.: Kiches are known to lose their Kiches powers once they lose their virginity. In addition to hurting Gyokuran, Shion decided to blaspheme against the Sarjalim faith by having sex with Mokuren. While Shion and Mokuren had struck a bargain where the intention of sex could not have been misinterpreted, Mokuren resisted at the last minute, and Shion pressed the issue forward anyway, effectively raping her. Gyokuran stumbled upon the two of them afterwards and became enraged, positive that Shion had taken advantage of her, especially given that she took ill directly afterwards. In an effort to pacify Gyokuran and achieve the goal she had sought in the first place by making that original agreement with Shion, Mokuren told Gyokuran quite directly that she and Shion had become engaged and that Gyokuran was to release him from the brig at once. At Mokuren's behest, Gyokuran caved and let Shion out, allowing the two to move into Mokuren's quarters together. The greatest contention in this event was Mokuren's point of view of the situation, why she resisted at the last minute when she had already agreed to have sex with Shion. Everyone else assumed the act of sex, the rape itself, was responsible for Mokuren's tears and distress after the fact, but later, it is revealed that this is not the case.: Mokuren was the second-to-last of the moon team to die. This was in spite of the fact that she had supposedly been inoculated against the virus that killed the rest of the team — Shukaido had wanted Shion to suffer alone for what he did to Mokuren, and so deceived Shion into believing that he had vaccinated Mokuren.

; Shion anime voices|Sho Hayami|Paul Dobson: Reincarnated as: Rin Kobayashi: Shion was a war orphan born on the moon of Tess who was rescued and sent to Shia from the middle of the conflict on Tess for control of the Homeworld. Shion possessed strong psychic powers and controlled them with ease. He also had a first-rate mind and became a renowned engineer.: Shion had serious emotional problems. As an orphan, he did not have a family until he was taken in by a foster father around age six. He was slowly but surely starting to trust and love his foster father, when a terrible accident occurred and his foster father died. He never truly trusted any of his friends, not even his childhood friend Gyokuran, whom Shion ended up hating because of Gyokuran's moral upstandingness and that fact that he was everything that Shion could never be.: Shion was the only male member of the team who did not fawn over Mokuren. In fact, he completely despised her. When it became clear to him that Gyokuran, his childhood rival, was completely obsessed with Mokuren, Shion decided to take advantage of this while sitting in the brig of the Moon Base by "getting to Mokuren first" in order to destroy Gyokuran's being on the most basic level. As a side benefit of this action, he intended to defile the sanctity of the Sarjalim faith, which had abandoned him so many times in the past, by ruining the last of Sarjalim's sacred avatars. And so, he struck a bargain with Mokuren when she came by to give him his lunch one day: I love you, give up your Kiches powers (virginity) and I will reconcile with Gyokuran, no matter what it takes. To this deal, surprisingly, Mokuren agreed. But during the act, Mokuren had a change of heart and resisted, but Shion did not listen and continued, effectively raping her. Afterwards, Mokuren took up ill and Gyokuran, enraged at Shion's perceived actions, demanded permanent exile for Shion. Mokuren, upon hearing of this, pulled herself together and declared that she and Shion had become engaged, and that Gyokuran would let him out of the brig NOW. At this pronouncement, Gyokuran was forced to release Shion from the brig, and Mokuren and Shion moved into Mokuren's quarters together. It is the confusion surrounding these events by all parties involved and not involved that leads to the underlying cause of the dark and terrible nature of the plot of the manga series.: Shion was the last of the moon team to die. He had been inoculated against the virus that was killing them, so lived alone for nine years after Mokuren died. He was unable to commit suicide because Mokuren warned him that people who commit suicide will not be reincarnated.: This is why Rin is nine years younger than everyone else. After Mokuren's death, Shion went insane. The cold, ruthless side that Rin sometimes displays is Shion's, and his plan is to make Shukaido suffer.

; Shukaido anime voices|Yasunori Matsumoto|Jason Gray-Stanford: Reincarnated as: Haruhiko Kazama: Shukaido was the team's physician. Shukaido tended to stay in the background for the most part. He was in love with Mokuren, as all the male team members were at some point. Shukaido was presented as calm, intelligent, and well-mannered. He was good friends with Gyokuran and Shion during college, and often tried to speak with Shion to defuse his anger over Gyokuran's popularity.: Shukaido managed to synthesize a vaccine for the virus that was killing the moon team, however, by that time he had already acquired the virus and only he, Mokuren, and Shion were left. Shukaido was only able to synthesize a single dose, and injected it into Shion. He injected Mokuren with a placebo and claimed that it inoculated her. Shukaido did this to punish Shion because he knew that Shion had raped her.

; Gyokuran anime voices|Toshiyuki Morikawa|: Reincarnated as: Jinpachi Ogura: Gyokuran was the team's archaeologist. Gyokuran was Shion's childhood friend; the two also went to school together with Shukaido. Gyokuran possessed psychic powers, but had difficulty controlling them and as a result had to wear special earrings to contain his power.: Gyokuran unwittingly became Shion's greatest rival, due to his being everything that Shion could not. When Gyokuran opposed Shion's idea of going down to earth after the Homeworld was destroyed, Shion became belligerent and Gyokuran had him thrown in the anti-Sarches brig. After the rape of Mokuren, Gyokuran went insane with rage at Shion, suggesting he be permanently exiled.: Jinpachi says that Gyokuran always admired Shion and cared deeply for him. Rin found this shocking, and refused to believe it. Gyokuran died from the virus first.

; Enju anime voices|Yoshino Takamori|Sherry Thoreson: Reincarnated as: Issei Nishikiyori: Enju was an anthropologist with telepathic powers. She had a steadfast love for Gyokuran, despite knowing she would never be able to compete with Mokuren for Gyokuran's attentions. Despite this, she never treated Mokuren badly and never let herself turn bitter over it. Later on, the two paired up after Shion and Mokuren got engaged. However, Gyokuran still loved Mokuren and believed that Shion forced her into the engagement, allowing him the hope that perhaps Mokuren did love him back. Because of this, even after they hooked up, Enju's feelings were never really returned by Gyokuran. : Shusuran was Enju's best friend and supported her unwaveringly as much as she could through Enju's days of trying to gain Gyokuran's interest. Enju was the fourth to die.

; Shusuran anime voices|Naoko Matsui|Myriam Sirois: Reincarnated as: Sakura Kokushou: Shusuran was a physicist. She was Enju's best friend and the two spent many hours gossiping about the goings-on of the moonbase. Shusuran admired not only Enju's looks, but also her ability to fall completely in love. Shusuran admits that she never felt love for anyone (although it is suggested that she did in fact love Enju), and apparently never paired up with anybody on the moonbase. She was the second to die.

; Hiiragi anime voices|Nobuo Tobita|Ted Cole: Reincarnated as: Daisuke Dobashi: Hiiragi was the team leader. Hiiragi was not shown to do much, and most day-to-day administration of the base seem to have been made by consensus or by Gyokuran.: Despite being the base leader he shows up rarely in flashback scenes, even in the long stretches of flashback, both from Shion and Mokuren's perspective, detailing their days before arriving at the moon base, the daily goings on at the moon base, and when the situation starts deteriorating on the moon base after the Homeworld is destroyed.: Hiiragi's most important function in the plot was his executive decision to forbid the scientists from evacuating to Earth after their homeworld was destroyed. Hiiragi was the third scientist to die.

Other Earthlings

; Hajime Sakaguchi anime voices|Nozomu Sasaki|Marcus Turner: Hajime is Alice Sakaguchi's younger brother. He is very protective of his sister and will do anything to keep her safe. He is incredibly opposed to Alice's engagement with Rin due to her perceived distress at the idea and his general dislike of Rin. Hajime eventually solicits Jinpachi's help in ending the engagement, as Jinpachi seems like a nice guy who genuinely cares about Alice, inadvertently cluing Jinpachi in to the secret engagement to which he and the others had, up to this point, been ignorant. Hajime is the only one in Alice's family who unflinchingly believes in her supernatural abilities and the ludicrous stories that go along with them.

; Kyoko Nishikiyori: Kyoko is the younger sister of Issei, and she is completely infatuated with her older brother. She expresses comical childish irritation any time he gets a phone call, especially from a girl, or shows any particular interest in other girls, whether romantic or not. While her role was not significant to the plot of the manga (she never appeared in the anime), she seems to be an attempt to make up for the lack of comedy in the story. Whenever Issei is angsting out the most about his bad romantic position among the reincarnates (and happens to be at home), you can count on Kyoko making an appearance and setting him straight.

; Raozo Matsudaira anime voices|Jō Fujimoto: Mr. Matsudaira was the leader of the Yakuza gang that took Tamura and his younger brother in when they were both very young. Mr. Matsudaira tasked Tamura at this time to take care of his son, Takashi, a job that he still performs to this day even though Matsudaira's Yakuza gang has since gone legitimate, as Matsudaira Corp., a construction company. Mr. Matsudaira cares a great deal about Tamura, says he thinks of him as a son, and is seen giving Tamura advice many times throughout the story, from how to deal with the death of his brother, how to deal with "S", to just general life advice.

; Takashi Matsudaira anime voices|Isshin Chiba|: The teenage son of Mr. Matsudaira and the leader of the Bakuto biker gang. "S" used Takashi for a couple of things: 1) to stage an attack on Tsuwabuki High School against Jinpachi and Issei in order to get Gyokuran's psychic powers inside of Jinpachi to manifest themselves and 2) to include some of "S's" own modifications to Tokyo Tower during the reconstruction effort being performed by Matsudaira Corp, Takashi's father's construction company. Later, Takashi is targeted again by "S", but this time, only to draw Tamura out so that "S" can take care of Tamura for good.

; Tamura's Brother: Tamura's brother, who is spoke of many times in the story, but whose name is never mentioned and is only shown twice in manga vol 18 (pages 120-121), died a few years after Matsudaira took the two brothers in. For most of the story, it is portrayed as an inexplicable suicide because Tamura didn't spend enough time with him, that Tamura feels eternally guilty over. It is the reason why Tamura seems to care so much about children and is all but a nanny to his charge, Takashi Matsudaira. Later it is revealed that Tamura's brother believed himself to be the cause of Tamura becoming Yakuza, and in order to put things right, he begged Masaki Majima to put an end to his feud with Tamura. When Majima blew him off, Tamura's brother drowned himself and sent Majima a letter saying that he begged Majima with his life to put an end to the feud. Mikuro, who can see and speak with the ghosts, allows conversation to pass between the two brothers (Tamura's brother seems to always follow him around) so that they can come to terms with these events finally. Mikuro has remarked on at least one occasion that Tamura's brother looks quite a bit like Haruhiko (and Majima confirms this), which explains why Tamura's brother seems very very interested in helping Haruhiko.

; Ayako Okamura anime voices|Yūko Kobayashi|Janyse Jaud: An associate of Tamura's and a piano teacher. She helps keep Alice safe when Rin is searching for her and keeps an eye on Haruhiko when he is ill several times. Tamura is constantly teased about when he is going to finally marry Ayako.

; Kazuto Tamura anime voices|Jurota Kosugi|Michael Dobson: Servant/bodyguard for the wealthy Matsudaira family and friend/father figure to Haruhiko. Years ago, Matsudaira Raozou adopted Tamura and his brother, who were orphans. Tamura was given the job of caring for Matsudaira's son Takashi, and he dedicated his life to it. Tamura's younger brother became lonely as a result and eventually killed himself. Tamura was overcome by remorse, blaming himself for not having noticed any problems and went to Matsudaira to resign. Matsudaira struck him in response and told him to make up for his mistake instead of running away- to learn what it really meant to protect someone. : Because of this, he is completely devoted to Takashi and becomes troubled when he learns that Takashi is being blackmailed into taking Razou's blueprints of the Tokyo Tower. He decides to meet the mysterious 'S' in his place, and after the fateful meeting his ribs are broken by Rin's newly found ESP. After receiving a premonition of this, Haruhiko teleports to Tamura shortly before his hospitalization. : When Tamura is released, he notices that Tamura's mother is distraught, and she reveals that Haruhiko has locked himself in his room. After entering his home and coaxing himself into the room, he sees what appears to be deep space and a man he never saw before (Shukaido). Tamura begs Haruhiko to tell him what's wrong, but is refused and he disappears in Tamura's arms. ; Mikuro Yakushimaru anime voices|Toshihiko Seki|Matt Hill: A human with ESP and the younger step-brother of Hokuto. Tamura contacted him through his brother, Hokuto, for advice about dealing with Rin and Haruhiko. During their meeting, Mikuro learns of Haruhiko disappearing in Tamura's arms and infers that Haruhiko isn't human, or else Tamura would have been teleported with him since they were touching. He also expresses to Tamura that he must have some special connection to Haruhiko if he was able to see Haruhiko's visions with him, including Haruhiko's alter-ego, Shukaido. Mikuro later meets with Haruhiko at an aquarium, telling him in a note to be careful about teleporting too often, as it was making his heart even weaker. After Rin learns that Haruhiko has been involved with Tamura and Mikuro, he decides to eliminate the two humans. Aside from this, Mikuro frequently speaks with Tamura's dead brother, who always seems to be with Tamura, relaying information between the two.

; Hokuto Yakushimaru anime voices|Ryō Horikawa|Ward Perry: Hokuto is an old friend of Tamura's from the days when the organization Tamura works for was illegitimate/Yakuza. Also being Mikuro's older step-brother, Hokuto makes it possible for Tamura to get in touch with Mikuro in order to help Tamura figure out what is wrong with Haruhiko and how to deal with Rin.

; Mrs. Yakushimaru: Mrs. Yakushimaru is Hokuto's biological mother and Mikuro's adoptive mother. Mrs. Yakushimaru was the woman who carried Mikuro to term as his surrogate mother, and finally adopted him at the age of 5 when his biological mother disowned him, believing the psychic powers he began to exhibit made him a monster. She is VERY protective of Mikuro, and gave Tamura a full dressing down at least once over his involvement with her son. Later, she was the one who impressed upon Tamura the need to save Rin as well as Haruhiko. Tamura took this lecture to heart and makes sure he keeps Rin's interests in mind while they desperately try to defuse Shion's influence over him.

; Mrs. Kobayashi anime voices|Chiyoko Kawashima|Sarah Ann Dafoe: Rin's mother, Mrs. Kobayashi, plays a significant role in the series. It is her intuition as a mother that allows her to see that her son is no longer himself. In vol 13 of the manga, Rin's mother, who had up to this point spoiled him rotten, giving him anything he ever wanted and allowing him to do anything he wants, yells at him, "Who ARE you! You're not my son!". This severe divergence from her typical personality of spoiling him causes him to he teleport away in abject fear despite already being injured, further injuring himself, and thereby sending him into hiding for the rest of the manga. Because of this, once the other reincarnates find out Rin is Shion instead of Shukaido and that he has been lying to them, the situation becomes even more desperate because they cannot locate him.

; Masaki Majima: A former Yakuza, Masaki was Tamura of the Matsudaira group's direct rival in the Kawakida group during the time when the both groups were still illegitimate and fighting each other. Since the two groups have both gone clean, he and Tamura have a silent pact to stay out of each other's business, which up to this point, has not been broken. Until now. Rin, practicing his ESP powers, manages to fake several bullet wounds in one of Masaki's people and spreads rumors that it was Tamura's doing. In this way, Rin is able to manipulate Masaki into doing all sorts of favors for him at the expense of Tamura and the other six reincarnates.; Boone: A bum that finds Rin dying in some bushes after Rin frantically teleports from the hospital after his mother yells at him. Boone solicits the help of Dr. Mori, an illegit street doctor, in order to provide discreet medical care to the child. Boone knows about Ginta's (Rin's current pseudonym) psychic powers and frequently observes Ginta's suspicious behavior while he's recovering, but does not judge him for it. Boone recognizes that it seems Ginta cannot go home for some reason and tells him to stay at the Dr's house until he feels he can return. In order to help pay for Ginta's medical care and housing at the Dr's house, Boone decides to get a job as a construction worker. Due to his character design and behavior, Boone is essentially recognizable as the reincarnation of La Zlo.

; Dr. Mori: Dr Mori is a licensed doctor, who used to work at a hospital, but got sick of the politics and quit. These days he does not maintain a legitimate practice and takes patients only by word of mouth, keeping all of these procedures hush-hush. He doesn't deal much with the police, not wanting to draw attention to his illegitimate practice, but he does have ties to the Yakuza, who frequently need under-the-table medical attention. He knows Majima of the former Kawakida Yakuza gang. Rin, going by the pseudonym Ginta, is rescued by the bum, Boone, a former patient of Dr. Mori's, and brought to Dr. Mori's house for treatment. Ginta remains as a resident at Dr. Mori's house until the end of the series.

Other Aliens

; Mokuren's Father anime voices|Akira Ishida: Rojion is his name (Marj calls him "Roja" for short), and he was a Kiches Sarjalian like Mokuren. He in paritcular of the Kiches was very sensitive to the emotions of others, which is why Marj, Mokuren's mother, liked him so much (she enjoys teasing him and making him cry). He met Marj in "Paradise" and they both decided to give up their Kiches in order to get married and have Mokuren. He attempts to rescue Mokuren from "Paradise" after she is stolen away from them at three years old. While he is successful, he dies not long after due to male Kiches' severely shortened lifespan.

; Mokuren's Mother: Marj was a Kiches Sarjalian just like Mokuren and her father. She met Mokuren's father in "Paradise" and they both decided to give up their Kiches in order to get married and have Mokuren. It was Mokuren's mother who told her the prophetic line, "All human beings have the power to create a single miracle, even without a Kiche," when she was referring to how she and Roja's miracle was Mokuren. Mokuren remembers this line her whole life and invokes her one miracle when she is having a seizure on the Moon Base due to being infected with the disease, forcing her spirit to jump into the future to save Rin from his 15 story fall.

; Mokuren's Grandparents: Just before Mokuren turned three, her grandparents showed up, and through various despicable means, kidnapped her and gave her to the state out of greed against her parents' wishes. At this time her name was changed from Shin Raki Sei Te Mokuren to Ko Hass Sei Te Moku Ren (spacing intentional).

; Lian Mode: Every Kiches Sarjalian has an assistant, and Mode was Mokuren's Lian assistant while she lived in "Paradise" and after. In addition to being her assistant, Mode was Mokuren's only female friend her entire life.

; Sev Oru: Sev Oru is a young boy that Mokuren befriends when she was a teenager after she snuck out of "Paradise" one day in order to interact with the real world. Mokuren decides that she would use him to get rid of her Kiches powers in the same manner that her parents had, but Sev Oru's father is staunchly opposed the idea because of Mokuren's Kiches nature. Later, Sev Oru's father, a circus performer, is injured at work and when Sev Oru appeals to Mokuren to heal him and she cannot, he turns his back on her.

; Kiches Sarjalian Elder anime voices|Hisako Kyōda: The Eldest of the Kiches Sarjalian, the Doyenne, the Elder has a particular liking for Mokuren due to her irreverence. Kiches of the Elder's age and experience are able to magically heal humans in addition to speaking with plants and making them grow. The Elder is the one who presents Mokuren with her Kiches prophecy, telling her that she will "remain a Kiches for the rest of [her] life" and "you can still fall in love, but only FALL in love, no more than that". Later, when Mokuren requests to go to ZKK-101, she goes to speak to the Elder, who shockingly approved such a ludicrous venture, and there, she is told, "you will go to [ZKK-101] ... and there you will experience a rebirth. Something about you will be reborn." Mokuren is again reminded of this second prophesy in a post-mortem message (natural causes) while she is on ZKK-101cite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 17 | year=2006 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1421505509| chapter= |pages=82-85] .

; Coco anime voices|Wakana Yamazaki: Tima Ti Se Coco Su is a girl Shion and Gyokuran fought over during college, further widening the rift between them. It is mentioned later by Sakura that perhaps Rin's classmate Ayumi is the reincarnation of Coco.

; Lian Karsh anime voices|Junko Midori: The only person Shion cares about throughout his terrible childhood during his fostering with La ZLo and after La ZLo dies. She is a Lian, or "priestess", of the Sarjalim faith. Shion is informed of her death due to pneumonia at the age of 51 while on the Moon Base.

; La Zlo anime voices|Kinryū Arimoto|Richard Newman: Shion's kind and patient foster father and veeda, one who guides those with special talents, after Shion had been rescued from the war-torn Tess. After only 78 days, La Zlo dies in a car accident while Shion is at school. La Zlo is from whom Shion realized what it was that he truly wanted from someone, anyone, in life, the space that Mokuren unwittingly filled later on the moon base.

; Kyaa anime voices|Tamao Hayashi: The alien pet and companion of La Zlo, Shion's foster father. Appears as a giant cat. Kyaa dies in a car accident with La ZLo while Shion is at school.

; Kyaa Junior: After finishing college and becoming gainfully employed as an engineer working for the state, Shion buys his own giant alien cat and names him Kyaa Junior, after La Zlo's Kyaa. Shion is later forced to sell Kyaa Junior to his vet for a loss while he is stationed on the Moon Base due to Kyaa Junior getting sick and the Lians not being able to afford his vet bill. Shion's purchase of Kyaa Junior, despite the ridiculous expense since this type of alien is considered an etremely exotic pet, was Shion's way of attempting to reclaim the life he began with La Zlo and Kyaa.

Names

Each of the alien scientist's names, as stated by Mokuren, seems to be the name of a plant in the language of the "NX sector" of KKcite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 9 | year=2005 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1591162726 | chapter= |pages=110-111] . The following is a list of Names and meanings.

Additionally, some of the names of the reincarnations have meaning, as shown below.

Flowers

For this reason, the Camellia can represent untimely death. This the flower Alice talks to frequently outside of her school.: Crocus - A common flower for kids to grow in windowsills. Represents longing and youthful rejoicing. This is the plant Alice and Rin brought home from the zoo, that Rin later dropped from the balcony.: Lily Magnolia - This flower represents a love of nature, and is Mokuren's namesake.: Lily of the Valley - These flowers represent integrity, innocence, and the return of happiness. They are sweet-smelling and hardy.: Peony - These large, bold flowers represent bashfulness in Japan.: Plum Blossom - These flowers represent purity, loyalty, and honesty. They also carry a sense of youth and masculinity.

;Manga volume 3: Currant - There is no traditional Japanese meaning to this non-native plant, despite how often they appear in PSME.: Tulip - This flower symbolizes sympathy, charity and benevolence, and the obvious flower for Haruhiko's mom to bring to Tamura upon his release from the hospital. Tulips can also represent fame.: Water Lily - This flower is a religious symbol in Buddhism, representing man's ability to achieve enlightenment. Despite this sacred significance, in Japan the water lily, most commonly the lotus variety, expresses conceit and false love. It is used to illustrate the virus as being divine punishment due to the scientists' own cold selfishness, as Daisuke mentions.

;Manga volume 5"Editor's Comments" in cite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 5 | year=2004 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1591162688 | chapter= |pages=199-200] : Baby's Breath - While there is no Japanese meaning for this imported flower, in English it connotes innocence.: Begonia - This flower symbolizes unrequited love, and is Shukaido's namesake. It also represents kindness, politeness and care, which is also fitting for Shukaido's mild-mannered personality. In English, it can also imply "dark thoughts" which may also be appropriate to represent Shukaido.: Carnation - This flower represents unabashed affection and a woman's love, and comes in a variety of colors, some of which have individual meanings. This is the flower Rin gives Alice, whie pretending it's from Haruhiko.: Iris - This flower represents mysterious people and expectant news, perfect for representing Mrs. Yakushimaru's unexpected guest, Tamura.: Chrysanthemum - This noble flower represents purity and nobility, making it the perfect background for Mrs. Yakushimaru's refined and imperious Kyoto-ite icyness as she dismisses Tamura.

;Manga volume 6"Editor's Comments" in cite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 6 | year=2004 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1591162696 | chapter= |pages=203-204] : Azalea - Azaleas are often considered conservative plants, expressing temperance and reserve. But they can also represent passion and enthusiasm.: Boton - This flower is a variety of peony imported from China centuries ago, and represents wealth, honor, and bashfulness. It is a suitable backdrop to Mrs. Yakushimaru as she explains hers and Mikuro's difficult past to Tamura.: Japanese Pagoda Tree - Called the Chinese Scholar tree in English, this tree often appears as the backdrop for its namesake, Enju.: Gladiolus - This flower is used only in connection with the moon characters, indicating a sense of destiny, as well as strength, security, caution, and discretion.: Lily - The backdrop of Mrs. Yakushimaru, white trumpet lilies, imply majesty, dignity and integrity, reinforcing her aura of polite intimidation as she speaks with Tamura at the temple. In general, all lilies imply a sense of refinement.

;Manga volume 9"Editor's Comments" in cite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 9 | year=2005 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1591162726 | chapter= |pages=177-178] : Daisy - Daisies convey a sense of innocence and inexperience. Hiwatari seems to enjoy using these to convey a sense of irony, since Shusuran and Enju are hardly naive little girls.: Delphinium - A beautiful but poisonous plant that is native to Europe, these plants seem to be used with regard to the English meaning since there is no Japanese meaning. In general, they represent ardent attachment, levity and airiness. The pink variety also conveys a sense of fickleness, while the purple variety implies haughtiness.: Orchid - The plants of this family represent the largest family in the flowering plant world, due to their adaptability -- they can survive extreme conditions and so can be found on six of the seven continents of the world (Antarctica being the exception). Despite its refined grace, the orchid represents selfish beauty and cheap or shallow love in Japan. Two of our scientists take a cultivar of this flower as their namesake: Gyokuran and Shusuran.: Rose - Roses represent love in Japan just as they do in the west, but of course, the colors each have their own individual meanings as well. Hiwatari seems to prefer using roses to symbolize melodrama rather than drama.

Development

"Please Save My Earth", like early manga series that suddenly become popular for many different manga artists careers', is an illustration of the development and transition of Hiwatari Saki from a novice to an experienced manga artist. The difference in art style between the volume 1 and volume 21 of the manga is quite drastic, as illustrated in the image to the right.

Another notable point is that Hiwatari Saki appears to be quite the manga otaku, as illustrated by the significant number of homages to various classic anime and manga sprinkled throughout the manga. Additionally, Shion, the main male romantic interest himself, is shown to be quite the manga otakucite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 3 | year=2004 | language=English | publisher=Viz Media | isbn=1591161428 | chapter= |pages=44-45] .

Reception

As of 2006, over 15 million copies of "Please Save My Earth" volumes had sold in Japan, making it one of the best-selling shōjo manga ever. Starting in volume 8 of the manga, a disclaimer appeared at the bottom of the first page of every compilation volume stating that the story was entirely fictional. This was due to letters to Hiwatari that she found disturbing, from people who were convinced that they had been part of the moon scientist's society (or even one of the moon scientists themselves) and had been reborn on Earth. ["1/4 Column Nonsense" (author notes) in cite book | last=Hiwatari | first=Saki | authorlink=Saki Hiwatari | title=Please Save My Earth | series=Volume 8 | year=2004 | language=English | publisher=Viz | isbn=1591162718 ] These disclaimers have since appeared in her others works, most notably on the first pages of each volume of "Global Garden".

Several manga artists have cited "Please Save My Earth" as an influence on them, including Naoko TakeuchiFact|date=July 2008 and Bisco Hatori.cite web | url=http://www.viz.com/products/products.php?&series_id=322&section=profiles | title=Bisco Hatori: author, artist | publisher=Viz Media | accessdate=2008-06-29 | quote=She enjoys reading all kinds of manga, but she's especially fond of the sci-fi drama "Please Save My Earth" and "Slam Dunk", a basketball classic.]

* Alice Sakaguchi
Summary = Alice Sakaguchi moves to Tokyo from Hokkaidō, in next door to the most annoying seven year old she's ever met. After enduring his torment repeatedly, even to the knowledge of her own family, she is still forced to babysit him. That day, while on the way home from the zoo, Alice and Rin run into Alice's new classmates Jinpachi and Issei who explain the suspicious scene Alice "accidentally" spied on the previous day. They claim they have been having synchronized dreams about the moon since middle school, and that the dreams took a turn for the pornographic the previous night, and Alice overheard them discussing it. Later that night after they are home, Alice and Rin get into a juvenile argument over her classmate Jinpachi and Alice slaps him, causing him to lose his balance on the balcony railing and fall off of the 15th story apartment balcony to the ground. Miraculously, he survives, although he is in a coma. While in his coma, he dreams that he is a Engineer named "Shion" who is stationed on a base on the moon with six others, all studying the Earth. Eventually he awakens from his coma, and then proceeds to have his mother request an engagement to Alice on his behalf. When Alice hears of this she faints and has her first moon dream as the beautiful Biologist, Mokuren. Meanwhile, a biker gang leader, Takashi, is sent a suspicious message by "S", who turns out to be a very adult-sounding and adult-acting Rin, exhibiting ESP powers. Rin then proceeds to demand that Takashi give him Tokyo Tower.

* Mokuren
Summary = Alice tells Jinpachi and Issei about her single moon dream as Mokuren. They excitedly confirm that the pictures Alice drew of Shion and Mokuren are how the two appear in their own dreams. They decide to seek out the other reincarnations and put an ad in Boo magazine. Meanwhile, Kazuto Tamura arrives to the home of Mr. Raozo Matsudaira in order to take care of his son, Takashi, who seems to have gone insane with fear. Tamura goes to investigate Takashi's "problem" and gets a letter from the same "S" who scared Takashi so badly. Later, Jinpachi and Issei are the target of an unauthorized hit by Takashi's bakuto biker gang at their school, and during the fight Jinpachi displays some ESP powers. Another moon dreamer, Haruhiko Kazama, who was once saved by Tamura, runs into Alice and Rin at a department store. Later, Issei receives a letter from two other moon dreamers who saw their ad, and so all three of them go to the station to meet the newcomers. Daisuke Dobashi is Hiiragi, and Sakura Kokusho is Shusuran. The others discover that Daisuke and Sakura seem to be much further along in their moon dreaming when they mention the destruction of scientists' Homeworld and their tragic deaths by a virus outbreak. Later that night, Tamura goes to meet "S" in Takashi's stead in order to find out what he wants.

* Alice Sakaguchi
Summary = It turns out that "S" was meeting with Takashi in order to give him the blueprints that are to be used in the Tokyo Tower renovation. Due to his interference, Tamura is nearly beat to death by Rin. Due to his ESP and his strong connection to Tamura, Haruhiko is able to sense this and teleports to Tamura's rescue in time to catch a glimpse of Rin as he flies away. A few days later, Alice goes to another meeting with the reincarnates and is forced to take Rin with her, whereby, to the surprise of everyone, he announces that he's the reincarnation of Shukaido. To explain the age difference, he mentions that his first reincarnation died in a car accident. After the meeting, Alice feels guilty that she triggered Rin's moon dreams, which largely seem to be nightmares, so she decides to quit meeting with the other reincarnates and join the choir. After seeing him in the hospital ward visiting Tamura, Rin decides to have a "chat" with Haruhiko about what Haruhiko's previous incarnation, Shukaido, did to Rin's true reincarnation, Shion, on the moon base. Here, Rin explains to Haruhiko his plan to gather the moon base passwords and "save the Earth". A few days later, Tamura, now out of the hospital, receives a call from Haruhiko's worried mother, asking him to come by to visit her son. When Tamura walks into Haruhiko's room, he is witness to Haruhiko's projected moon dream. Haruhiko, terrified, teleports out of the room and to the river in order to drown himself. Issei and Sakura happen to be walking by at the same time, discussing Issei's struggle with Enju's feelings toward Gyokuran, and witness this. Just after Haruhiko jumps, Issei scrambles and dives in after him.

* Rin Kobayashi
Summary = After Haruhiko dives into the river, he dreams of the moon and remembers his password. He wakes up in the hospital with Tamura looking over him. Tamura thanks Issei and Sakura, and they head out squeeing over Tamura's coolness. Again, Rin meets with Haruhiko and this time tells him that he, Rin, is going to arrange a meeting with the other reincarnates, but that Haruhiko is to tell them that he is the reincarnation of Shion so that he can get close to Alice and get her password. Rin gives Haruhiko a script that he is to follow to the letter. Jinpachi later finds out about Alice's engagement to Rin through her brother, Hajime. Jinpachi is distraught, and argues with Alice over it, then later discusses it with Issei on the roof of the school, whereby Issei kisses him and Jinpachi freaks out, inadvertently hurting Issei. Most of the reincarnates are missing from the meeting later on and begin to question the purpose of even having the meetings to begin with. That is when Daisuke gets notification that he's "found" Shion, indicating that their meetings were meant to continue. The boys later tell Alice that Shion's been found, but she declines attendance, claiming yet again that she isn't Mokuren. Meanwhile, Tamura gets in touch with an old friend of his, whose brother is an ESPer. Tamura meets with Hokuto and his ESPer brother, Mikuro, and discusses both "S"s powers and the strange things he's experienced with Haruhiko. He decides to move Takashi and himself to Kyoto in order to protect Takashi and to have easy-access to Mikuro. Rin meets with Haruhiko one last time before the meeting, where Haruhiko divulges Shukaido's password to Rin. After he returns home, Haruhiko discovers that Tamura has left for Kyoto and freaks out.

* Mokuren
Summary = At the news of Tamura moving to Kyoto, Haruhiko freaks out and teleports directly to Tamura's apartment, whereby Tamura calmly explains that he's going there to learn more about ESPer powers and will return when he's prepared to defeat Rin. Rin sees Tamura off at the train the next day, while Haruhiko sits down to write Tamura a letter detailing the complete story of Shukaido, Shion, and the moon base scientists. Later, Haruhiko shows up for the meeting with the other reincarnations and has to improvise his story due to the unforeseen issue of Issei and Sakura having been there when he tried to kill himself. Rin is displeased, and tortures him later for it, while threatening Tamura's life if Haruhiko tells him anything else about the moon dreams. Tamura, in Kyoto, stops by to see Mikuro at his family's flowershop, whereby Mikuro's mother tells him to go away and never come back in no uncertain terms. Haruhiko is scared for Tamura's life because of the letter he wrote him, and so he teleports to Kyoto and tells Takashi to promise to tear up the letter when it arrives. A few days later, Takashi is about to tear the letter up, but Tamura intercepts it and reads it anyway. A few days later, Haruhiko meets with Alice as Shion in what appears to be a date, and they discuss whether or not Alice is Mokuren. The situation becomes rather awkward after Rin leaves, and Haruhiko demands to know how Alice feels about her engagement to Rin. At the same time, Issei and Sakura decide to go visit Tamura and ask about Haruhiko's suicide attempt. Unfortunately, they are not able to contact Tamura, but on their way out, they spy Haruhiko and Alice together on their secret date.

Summary = Issei, after seeing Alice and Haruhiko together, calls Jinpachi, who in turn tells Issei about Alice and Rin's engagement. Later, Rin decides to break off his engagement with Alice. Before Rin shows up, Jinpachi tells everyone at the next meeting about Alice and Rin's engagement and also about Alice and Haruhiko's secret meeting. Rin appears and, having overheard, tells the others he ended the engagement because Haruhiko told him to. With all this information, the others really start to distrust Haruhiko and discuss the passwords, where, after a few minutes, Daisuke steps in and tells everyone to remain silent about their passwords, explaining that together they could activate some dangerous functionality on the moon base. Meanwhile Tamura, in Kyoto, receives a call from Hokuto saying his mother wants to meet with him. He goes to meet her and she explains she is very protective of Mikuro due to the how his ESP power negatively affected his childhood. However, Haruhiko's letter, which she'd read, made it clear she needed to discuss things with Tamura. She explains to him that he must not only strive to help Haruhiko, but that he needs to save Rin as well. Later, at the reincarnates meeting, they decide to draw up a timeline and by doing so, they start recalling details, such as Mokuren's singing causing the plants to grow, and the video they took of her singing on Thanksgiving one year. On the way home, Sakura recalls a sad moment from Shusuran's perspective about her and Enju. Alice later agrees to attend the next reincarnates meeting. Finally, while Haruhiko is at the aquarium, Mikuro appears and slips him a message telling him that teleportation hurts his heart, and then disappears before he can react.

Summary = Haruhiko believes the letter he received is from an associate of "S's", and so calls up Takashi to verify he tore up his letter to Tamura. Takashi tells Haruhiko that he did tear up the letter, as Tamura secretly instructed him to tell Haruhiko. At the meeting, Alice looks at the timeline and contests that Shukaido was the last to die due to various things Rin has said about his dreams. The others have remarked previously that Haruhiko's personality does not match up well with Shion's, from the little they've seen of him, but still do not think much of it and leave the timeline the way it is. Later, Haruhiko meets with Rin and chastises Rin about having his associates, like "M", spy on him, showing Rin the letter. Rin's obvious lack of recognition instantly clues Haruhiko in that "M" was working for Tamura. As soon as he leaves, he frantically calls Tamura, telling him to get out of there and hide Takashi and "M", and that he's heading to Kyoto NOW. Rin, meanwhile, sets up a trap for Takashi, in order to draw "M" out and finish off Tamura for good. Tamura, as planned, intercepts the fake "love letter" and goes to the meeting location in Takashi's place yet again, this time with Mikuro in tow. A battle of wits between Rin and Tamura, as well as a psychic battle between Rin and Mikuro begins. Just as Rin deals the final blow to the two of them, someone teleports inbetween them, taking the brunt of the blast.

* Shion
Summary = The "someone" who appeared inbetween Tamura, Mikuro and Rin was Haruhiko, having teleported three times at significant danger to himself in order to save them. After deflecting the blast, Rin blasts him again. As Rin is about to finish the rest of them off again, Mikuro simultaneously counters his attack, causing a huge explosion. Rin teleports, further damaging himself, and then wakes up in the hospital, scared to death. The doctors say he's been hit by a car even though his wounds aren't consistent with that. Rin lapses into dreams of Shion's childhood... Shion was born on a war-torn moon called "Tess". He was found by the alliance after killing a group of soldiers with his psychic powers, who then transported him to Shia, the largest of the outlying planets of the Homeworld. There he lived with the priestesses of Sarjalim, the Lim Lians, learning about the history of their race, as well as the Sarjalim faith. This is when he meets Lian Karsh, the only person he would have an ounce of respect for his entire life. After not too long, a foster father was found for him, named La Zlo. Shion then moves in with La Zlo and his pet alien cat, Kyaa. Through La Zlo's patience and understanding, Shion began to learn what it was to have a real family. That is, until La Zlo and Kyaa's tragic deaths after only 78 days of fostering. He was taken back to the Lim Lians to live, and eventually ended up meeting Gyokuran in grade school. Later, in highschool, Gyokuran introduces Shion to Shukaido. Shion remains bitter from the day he first meets Gyokuran about Gyokuran's perfect life and how he, Shion, could never have anything like that or ever fit in with these perfect people.

* Mokuren
Summary = In high school, Shion and Gyokuran have a large fight over a girl named Coco, not because Shion liked her at all, but because Shion used her to hurt Gyokuran. Gyokuran has now become a rival of Shion's, as he sinks to the level of using other people in order to hurt Gyokuran. They have a fight and part on bad terms. After graduation, Shion goes on to become an acclaimed Engineer, one of the best. Despite this, he just can't seem to find someone who will love him for him, no matter what. Eventually, due to his bad behavior, he is forced to join the ZKK-101 team and go to a remote location to study the planet known colloquially as Earth. Because it's an undesirable job, he gets a large sum of money for it. Using that, he goes to buy his own giant alien cat and names him Kyaa Junior. Before leaving for the ZKK-101 mission, he leaves Kyaa Junior with Liam Karsh. When he meets the rest of his team, he becomes incredibly bitter about Mokuren's perceived perfection as a Kiches Sarjalian. And so, after they arrive on the moon base, he finds himself enjoying tormenting her as often as the situation presents itself. He also despises the way all the other men fawn all over her. After a while, he is informed via message that Lian Karsh has died and that Kyaa Junior is ill and needs medical attention, but the Lians cannot afford the vet bill. So Shion authorizes the sale of Kyaa Junior to the vet for a loss. He takes out his frustration on Mokuren, who then heads off to secretly sing to the plants, which causes the moon base to be overgrown with weeds overnight, breaking all of Shion's computers.

* Mokuren
Summary = The scientists all work on cleaning up the weeds, and Shion is furious with Mokuren for messing up his computers. Gyokuran tells Shion that he's in love with Mokuren, while Shion dismisses his comment saying it doesn't matter since she is Kiches, and cannot get married. Fast forward, the scientists are cleaning up the weeds for the umpteenth time, and Shusuran is incredibly annoyed. She argues with Enju about Mokuren being in love with Gyokuran. Later, the scientists receive desperate messages from Shia saying that the war situation has taken a turn for the worse. Finally, the signal from Shia is completely lost, indicating total annihilation. Everyone goes into shock for a few days, then Shion decides it would be a great idea if they were to go down to Earth to live out their lives. Mokuren initially agrees. But Gyokuran and Hiiragi disagree, and Hiiragi as team leader puts his foot down. Shion, however, continues to harass Shusuran for her password and ends up getting thrown in the anti-psychic brig for being a dissenter. While bringing him his lunch, Shion eventually says to Mokuren: I love you, give up your Kiches (give me your virginity), and I will do whatever it takes to make up with Gyokuran. Surprisingly, she accepts. When she enters Shion's cell for the deed, she changes her mind at the last minute and resists. She is later found crying by the others, and Gyokuran goes insane with rage. Shion crowns himself the winner in their rivalry as he got to Mokuren first with the bonus of blaspheming against Sarjilam at the same time. When Gyokuran demands permanent exile for Shion, Mokuren, after being "ill" for a week, steps up and demands Gyokuran let Shion out because the two of them are engaged.

Summary = After being released from the brig, Shion moves into Mokuren's quarters. He realizes, after a time, that Mokuren really was the true person for him, as she has forgiven him despite all he's done, that she "chose" him over all else. She did not lose her Kiche because she is truly divine, and nothing he could possibly do could defile her. Rin then wakes up in his hospital room and silently vows to destroy Tamura. Haruhiko has been taken to Mikuro's mother's house in Kyoto for recovery. Jinpachi shows up at Rin's hospital room and gives him Gyokuran's password. Jinpachi talks to Issei about giving his password to Shukaido (Rin) afterwards, and Issei sleeps on the thought, finally telling Jinpachi the next day during a heated argument that he's not going to give his password to anyone but Shion (Haruhiko). Issei meets up with Sakura afterwards and frets more over his struggle with Enju's emotions and what to do about the situation. Sakura tells him to let Enju and her love for Gyokuran go. Sakura goes to Issei's school the next day and slugs Jinpachi for being insensitive toward Issei, while giving him Issei's, Enju's, password to give to Shukaido (Rin). Later, Alice is told by Rin's mother that he is going to be taking piano lessons with Ayako Okamura, Tamura's "girlfriend". Alice talks to Rin about it, and gets incredibly jealous over what she perceives to be Rin's "romantic" interest in Miss Ayako.

Jinpachi tells Alice he loves her again and asks her to consider it seriously after all of this drama with the moon dreaming is finally over. Rin now has four of the passwords to the moon base. Tamura and Mikuro come to visit Rin in the hospital trying to reason with him, but also showing him that they know who he is. They discover inadvertently that Rin was targeting Ayako in order to get to Tamura. They pull Ayako aside when she comes to visit Rin to discuss his piano lesson and they eventually convince her to lay low for a while. Rin's mother is severely stressed out by this visit and mentally checks out for a while. Due to the news of Shion (Haruhiko) targeting them, Alice decides that she will recall all of Mokuren's moon dreams for Rin, and informs him of this. Rin argues with her and yells at her to get out of his hospital room. Jinpachi kisses Alice and reaffirms that he believes Mokuren truly loved Gyokuran instead. Rin seems to be taking a while to heal due to his ESPer power usage at the battle. He faints and recalls a moon dream of Shion, alone on the moon base, building something Rin believes to be terrible and powerful, but he just can't seem to recall what it is. Rin is very obviously scared to death of it. But what is it?!

Boone tells Rin they will not call the cops on him and that he can stay at Dr Mori's house until he is ready to leave. Jinpachi, Issei and Alice arrive in Kyoto, and Alice falls ill just before their meeting with Tamura. Rin practices precision telekinesis while another kid spies on him. Rin ends up using the other kid to form a gang of grade schoolers. Jinpachi, Issei and Alice, feeling better now, go to meet with Tamura and Haruhiko. There, Haruhiko comes clean, explaining that he is Shukaido, not Shion, and that Rin's been forcing him to pretend otherwise. He explains the horrible thing that Shukaido did to Shion on the moon base, giving Shion the only vaccine to the virus, forcing him to live another nine years alone. This is the real reason for Rin's age difference. Tamura then explains about Rin's actions concerning the Tokyo Tower renovation as well. Afterwards, Jinpachi and Issei discuss with each other about the meeting with Haruhiko, eventually deciding that he's very brave to have come clean of such a terrible thing his past reincarnation did. The next day, Alice begins hallucinating about the scientists at the temple they visit in Kyoto, causing her to eventually faint and the cherry trees to bloom out of season. Jinpachi and Issei notice the Kiches mark appear on Alice's forehead, finally convinced that Alice is the reincarnation of Mokuren, as she begins to dream of her past.

As they sit down to talk, the emotional wall around him crumbles. Majima looks up psychic powers in a book store when he is approached by some children who ask him about an alliance with their "hero" (Rin) in order to finish Tamura off. Summary = Alice uses Mokuren's power to break the forcefield Rin placed around Dr Mori's house. Rin returns, surprised at this, and needing to get Alice out of there since Majima gave up the location. Alice tells Rin they should go to Tokyo Tower and destroy the moon base, giving him Mokuren's password -- Shion's own name. Jinpachi appears, yelling at Rin, as the others come in behind him. Rin is overwhelmed and an explosion happens -- Rin is gone. Alice and Mikuro, Jinpachi and Tamura, and Haruhiko all teleport to Tokyo Tower. The others take a taxi. Rin fights Mikuro as the others argue with him about what he's doing. He begins inputting the passwords through the device he had built during the renovation. As he enters the final password, Alice screams at Rin to blow the base up. Rin enters system code 999, self destruct, but the computer returns with "unable to comply". Confused and desperate, Rin tries again, with the same response. He remembers now the device that Shion built while alone on the moon base: a 3D holographic image of Mokuren singing, made from the video Shusuran took. And that device continued playing on after Shion died, Mokuren's eternal resonating song causing the base to be overgrown with weeds and the computer to malfunction for the final time. Rin faints at this realization, causing him to fall from the top of Tokyo Tower. Gyokuran jumps to his rescue, teleporting him to safety, as Rin dreams of leaving the moon base, and Shion, behind. Yet again, Rin is in the hospital in a coma. When Rin wakes up Alice confesses her absolute love for him, and Jinpachi is disappointed. The story concludes four years later, with Alice exchanging letters with Haruhiko, discussing what everyone's doing now.

OVA

The series was adapted by Production I.G as a six-episode OVA anime series directed by Kazuo Yamazaki, covering roughly the first half of the story. Due to trying to encompass the manga's long and complex plot in so short a space, the anime series has been criticized as being disjointed, confusing, and leaving too much out. [See, for example, reviews at [http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/review/please-save-my-earth/dvd Anime News Network] , [http://www.animefu.com/index.pl?node_id=15488 Animefu] , and [http://www.ex.org/5.7/21-anime_psme.html EX] . Image Videos

"Please Save My Earth Music Image Video: The Passing of the Golden Age" contains six music videos with footage not seen in the OVA and scenes taken from the manga, as well as a slightly different version of the OVA ending sequence, and the ending credits for the image videos.These image videos were released with the below movie on a single Region 2 DVD in Japan entitled "Boku no Chikyuu wo Mamotte Vol.4" (Victor Entertainment, VIBF-77) and are not available in Region 1.

; Image Video Titles
# Prologue ~kiniro no toki nagarete~
# Mikadzuki no Shindai
# Yume no Sumika
# Moon Light Anthem ~Enju 1991~
# Ring
# Tokete yuku Jikan
# Toki no Kioku
# Epilogue: Etude ~Tensei Gensou~

Of these, the two most significant contributions to the plot that was left out of the OVA are from "Mikadzuki no Shindai" and "Ring".

"Mikadzuki no Shindai" contains a number of new scenes from Mokuren's past. In the OVA, only Shion's past gets any amount of screen time but Mokuren had just as much, if not more than he did in the manga. This image video will likely not make a whole lot of sense to someone who has not read the manga, but the scenes in it are meant to demonstrate that Mokuren's life up to the point when she goes to ZKK-101 has not been nearly as happy as the OVA makes viewers think.

The image video "Ring", on the other hand, shows a very pared-down version of the end of the manga that was left out of the OVA. It explains why Rin needed Tokyo Tower and why was he was collecting the passwords of the other scientists. The title of this image video is another way to write "Rin" in English, as mentioned in a the manga a few times.

"Moon Light Anthem ~Enju 1991~" is an image video dedicated to Enju, depicting Issei's struggle to deal with Enju's incredibly strong feelings toward someone she cannot have.

"Toki no Kioku" is the ending animation from the OVA with a slight modification: Mokuren and Shion looking out across the sea near the end instead of Alice and Rin. This image video is the only occurrence of this version of the ending sequence; the movie uses the OVA version.

Movie

"Please Save My Earth Movie: From Alice to Rin-kun" is a two-hour "movie" narrated by Alice, reminiscing on the events of the OVA as she strolls through a park on her way to meet up with Rin. The movie adds a couple of new scenes at the very end but removes an hour of footage from the original. The "present day" scenes of Alice and Rin from the movie add scenes that were not present in the manga.

This movie was released with the above image videos on a single Region 2 DVD in Japan entitled "Boku no Chikyuu wo Mamotte Vol.4" (Victor Entertainment, VIBF-77) and is not available in Region 1.
