Delitzsch (German pronunciation: [deː lɪtʃ], from the Slavic delc) is a large district and also an important regional center in Saxony. With over 26,300 inhabitants Delitzsch is the largest city in the northern district of Saxony. The city belongs to the metropolitan area of Leipzig-Halle and is a part of the metropolitan region of Saxony triangle.

History

Delitzsch was founded as a town around 1200 AD (according to chronicles) and became recognized as a city in 1300 AD. Both before and after its founding, the city fought off many invaders: first the Slavic tribes who had lived there before the city was founded and then, later, in the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), the Swedes. A legend arose from this final encounter with the Swedes, saying that when the Swedes reached the river Lober, the tower warden's daughter spied them and blew a trumpet, allowing the citizens of the town to get to safety and prepare, and as a result the invaders were defeated. Every year there is a historical fair (medieval style) to celebrate this victory over the Swedes and, during the fair, shopping centers are open on Sundays.

In World War II (1939 - 1945), only one building was burned, the station. In comparison to other German cities, that was minimal damage.

According to a 1996 survey, Delitzsch had more than 27,000 inhabitants. However, many young people leave the region due to the high unemployment rate in the "Neue Bundesländer" (New Federal States). They instead go to the western parts of Germany to seek better employment and educational opportunities.

Geographical Location

The city of Delitzsch is located in the northwestern part of the district north of Saxony, at an altitude of 94 meters above sea level. Due to the direct location on the border with Saxony-Anhalt Delitzsch is the northernmost city in Saxony. Located on the north heath and recreation area Goitzsche extends across the border to Bitterfeld-Wolfen. The east is the spa town of Bad Düben, which is the starting point for the Dubin Heath, which in turn, extends east to the Elbe. Further south, bordering the city of Leipzig, west of the Saale city hall, at the city of Delitzsch. In addition, the rivers Lober and mill race, which form in the city park, a meadow landscape, through the west and north of the city.

Traffic

Road

To the west of the city, crossing the roads 183a and 184. The federal highway 184, is in its southern course a connection to Leipzig-center on the city terminal B2 and the A14 through the traffic intersection at the Leipzig Exhibition Center. Because of the lignite mining (in the 1960s), the B184 north to three kilometers west and in 2008 moved again opened to traffic direction Bitterfeld. The B184 travels around the entire core city of Delitzsch. 183a on the road leads northwest to the B100 and thus to the A9. To the northeast leads to Bad Düben B183a and the Dubin Heath. Also crosses the B183a B2 in the village Wellaune.

Rail transport

Delitzsch has an "upper station with two platforms and a" lower station "with three tracks. Both stations are in the tariff zone 165 of the regional public transport network. Air traffic

The airport Leipzig / Halle is located 14 miles southwest of Delitzsch, right on Schkeuditzer cross. He serves as an international airport for Leipzig / Halle and is on the A9 by car or with a change of Halle and Leipzig can be reached by train.

Politics

City council

The City Council consists of the Mayor and Delitzsch of the statutory number of 30 city council members. Every five years the City Council newly elected and therefore has its next election in 2014. The distribution of seats was raised since the last local elections on June 7, 2009 as follows:

• FPD: 1 seats (joint group with CDU)
• NPD: 1 seat
• FWG: 4 seats (voters' association of Delitzsch and its districts)

The inaugural meeting of the newly elected City Council was held on 6 August 2009 at the Town Hall instead of Delitzsch.

Mayor

The last mayor elections were in June 2008. As in the first round (June 8, 2008) none of the six candidates for mayor had the absolute majority of valid votes, a new election was held on 22 June 2008. In the second round, won Manfred Wilde (Independent) with 60.22% of the valid votes. His office as mayor, he joined on 14 August 2008. Under his authority as Mayor and Councillor for the construction, trade order and Thorsten is Beautiful (Independent).

The previous mayor had Denef and Mayor Gerhard Heinz Bieniek (both CDU).

According to the rules in Delitzsch takes place every seven years to elect a new mayor.

Coat of Arms

The emblem of the town Delitzsch combines two different arms, the house of Wettin or tribal emblem and the County of the Mark Meissen. It shows two upright poles blue (Landsberger piles) that are in a golden box, and this split in three parts. In the middle of the main shield of the emblem can be seen in an inclined position as a means to shield Meissen black lion on a golden shield. The middle blade is tilted forward, and so the lion appears as upright as possible, or borders. He has two tail tuft, with their division begins in the middle of the tail, which should point to the Mark Meissen County. Local businesses

The most important industries in Delitzsch included the sugar and confectionery industry. Currently, the Delitzscher Chocolate Factory (acquired on 1 October 2008 by the Halloren Chocolate Factory AG), the EuroMaint Rail GmbH (former rail car plant SFW Delitzsch GmbH), URSA Insulation and the Smurfit Kappa Corrugated board plant major industrial employer. Education

The first school was built around 1426 by Delitzsch as a boys' school, and was in the 16th Century expanded, as because of the new, compulsory education, the girls had to go to school. Today there are in the greatest city in the district north of Saxony for about 5,500 students ten public and three private schools. These include three primary schools, two middle schools (secondary schools), a high school, two colleges and two special schools. Schools are privately owned and the School of Music, the Kreisvolkshochschule Delitzsch and acting school.
