Malmaddi is a residential area in Dharwad city near the railway station. There is a pond in malamaddi known as "Yemmikeri" literally meaning buffalo's pond. The area is predominated by educated middle class people. The locality was laid by independent houses ( bungalow ) with courtyard and kitchen garden. This type of layout lead to friendship among dwellers and harmony, where people used to know not only neighbours ,but entire locality. Women used to chat with each other by standing near compound wall of the house. Men and youth used junction of roads as their meeting place (Adda). Road side tea shops in the locality provided space for gossip and talk. Now these houses are being replaced by Apartments due to tremendous influx of population.Old charm ,friendliness, camaraderie is being lost. The name is derived from the number of good looking girls available, often called "mal" - a colloquial used in Dharwad region.
