Geoff Swier

Geoff Swier studied economics at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

He was an economist in the New Zealand Parliamentary Labour party research unit (1983-84). He assisted in the development of an Economic Policy Package proposed by Roger Douglas, the Labour party spokesperson on Finance. This formed the basis of the Labour party's economic policy implemented following the snap election of 1984. These policies were colloquially known as “Rogernomics”. Subsequently he was an econcomic adviser to the Minister of Finance Roger Douglas (1984-1987)

Between 1993 and 1999 he was a key figure in the electricity and gas industry reforms undertaken by the Kennett Government, in the state of Victoria (Australia). He was deputy director of the Electricity Supply Industry Reform Unit within the Department of Treasury and Finance which was responsible for restructuring of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria and the Gas and Fuel Corporation of Victoria and the subsequent privatisation of the electricity and gas businesses.

In 2005 he was appointed as a member of the Australian Energy Regulator and an associate commissioner of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission [ [http://www.treasurer.gov.au/tsr/content/pressreleases/2005/066.asp Treasury Ministers Portal ] ] .
