Gustave E. Von Grunebaum

Gustave E. Von Grunebaum (1 September 1909 in Vienna Austria – 27 February 1972 in Los Angeles USA) was an Austrian historian and arabist.

Gustave has a Ph.D. in Oriental studies at the University of Vienna. When the Nazi Germany absorbed Austria in the Anschluss of 1938 he opted for the United States where he got a position at the Asia Institute in New York under Arthur Upham Pope. In 1943 he went on to University of California, and was made professor of Arabic in 1949. In 1957 he became professor of Near Eastern History and directory of a new department called Near Eastern Center.

Gustave was married to Giselle Steureman.

In 1943 he went on to the University of Chicago, and was made professor of Arabic in 1949. In 1957 he became professor of Near Eastern History at UCLA, and directory of a new department there called the Near Eastern Center.
