Wolf River (Middle Tennessee)

Wolf River (Middle Tennessee)

The Wolf River of Middle Tennessee rises on the Cumberland Plateau at the confluence of its three forks. This area is best known as the area in which Sergeant Alvin C. York, the famous World War I hero, grew up. He operated a mill on its banks in the later part of his life; the mill is now part of a state park. This small river is part of the Cumberland River Drainage Basin.

Flowing across northern Fentress County, Tennessee the stream then enters Pickett County, flowing through a rolling area of woodlands and a few farms. It crosses briefly into Clinton County, Kentucky where its water becomes slack due to the impoundment of Dale Hollow Reservoir on the Obey River; in fact, its confluence with the Obey is essentially located at a corner composed of Pickett County, Tennessee, Clay County, Tennessee, and Clinton County, Kentucky. This embayment also enters Cumberland County, Kentucky and forms a major component of the Dale Hollow Reservoir. A rather large island, Trooper Island, is here.

This stream is not to be confused with the Wolf River of West Tennessee which flows into the Mississippi at Memphis.
