Stockholm International Exhibition (1930)

Stockholm International Exhibition (1930)

The Stockholm International Exhibition was an exhibition held in 1930 in Stockholm, Sweden, that had a great impact on the architectural styles known as Functionalism and International Style. This exhibition prominently featured the work of Gunnar Asplund, who began his career as a Neo-Classicist, and the work of Sven Markelius. The exhibition's slogan was: ”Acceptera!”, or ”Accept!”.

Subsequent to the exhibition, functionalism became the predominant architectural style in Sweden. This style used materials minimally: columns were only as thick as needed, rather than oversized to express their function, as in classical columns. This minimal use of materials created an aesthetic of poverty or Protestantism. [cite book
