STS (Cyrillic CTC) is a commercial television station based in Moscow, Russia. It belongs to the CTC Media, a Delaware-registered, Moscow-based NASDAQ-traded (CTCM) company with a market capitalization exceeding US$4 billion. The company is co-owned by Modern Times Group (Sweden) and Alfa Bank (Russia).Alexei Bessudnov, "Media Map" (183–189), "Index on Censorship", Volume 37, Number 1, 2008, p. 184.] The CEO is Alexander Rodnyansky, a Ukrainian-born film director and producer who also founded the 1+1 TV network in Ukraine. STS has the fourth largest audience of any Russian television network.

History

STS was launched in December 1996 and today is a leading entertainment network in Russia. Focusing on entertainment, STS broadcasts an optimal mix between Russian productions and international programming of interest to its target audience, viewers aged 6–54, with a particularly strong appeal to younger audiences. STS’s powerful brand has strong recognition with a broad cross-section of viewers who are attracted by its original and dynamic programming which has a youthful and aspirational outlook.

Approximately 100 million people are within STS’s signal reach. In 2007, STS achieved an average audience share in its target demographic of 11.3%.STS network reaches approximately 87% of urban households. It ranks as the fourth most watched nationwide broadcaster in Russia overall.

The STS Network currently has about 350 affiliates, including 19 owned-and-operated stations.

Russian series

CTC Media works with the leading Russian TV content production companies. STS airs both licensed series and sitcoms, such as "The Nanny" ("Моя прекрасная няня"), "Who rules in this house?" ("Кто в доме хозяин?", which is the Russian remake of "Who's the Boss?"), "Born not pretty" ("Не родись красивой", based on the popular Colombian telenovela "Yo soy Betty, la fea", known in English as "Ugly Betty") and original Russian series and sitcoms, such as "Cadets" ("Кадетство"), "Daddy’s Girls" ("Папины дочки").

Foreign movies

CTC Media maintains close working relationships with all the major Hollywood studios. It selects the best European and Hollywood movies such as "Pirates of the Caribbean", "Kill Bill", "Harry Potter", "Spiderman" and "Scoop".

Russian shows

STS offers the best TV shows to its audience. Among the most successful shows are "Who is Smarter than a Fifth Grader?" ("Кто умнее пятиклассника?") - quiz show, "What Not to Wear" ("Снимите это немедленно") - style, "The Brainiest" ("Самый умный") - children's quiz show"Good Jokes" ("Хорошие шутки") - comedy show, "Stories in Details" ("Истории в деталях") - infotainment, "Galileo" ("Галилео") - infotainment, "Thank God you are here!" ("Слава Богу, ты пришел!") - comedy show, "Movies in details" ("Кино в деталях") - infotainment, "In the mood with Grishkovets" ("Настроение с Гришковцом") - entertainment.

Animation

World famous cartoons from the collections of the Walt Disney Company, Universal Studios and Warner Bros. make up an important part of STS’s daily programming. Every week day a time slot from 2 pm. to 4 pm. is given exclusively to animated series such as "Woody Woodpecker" ("Приключения Вуди и его друзей"), "Aladdin" ("Аладдин"), "Ghostbusters" ("Охотники за приведениями"), "Scooby-Doo" ("Скуби Ду"), "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers" ("Чип и Дейл спешат на помощь"), "DuckTales" ("Утиные истории").

This makes STS the leader in this time slot, with an average audience share of 17.8% of audiences 6-54.

Foreign series

STS’s programming mix includes a wide variety of popular foreign series like "Heroes" ("Герои"), "Smallville" ("Тайны Смолвилля"), "The O.C." ("Одинокие сердца"), "Grey’s Anatomy" ("Анатомия страсти"), "Charmed" ("Зачарованные"), "Desperate Housewives" ("Отчаянные домохозяйки"), "Beverly Hills 90210" ("Беверли Хиллз 90210"), "Melrose Place" ("Мелроуз плейс"), "Kommissar Rex" ("Комиссар Рекс"), "Nip/Tuck" ("Части тела"), "Hannah Montana" ("Ханна Монтана"), "Lizzie McGuire" ("Лиззи Магуайер")

Top quality series by the biggest Hollywood producers became an important part of STS’s brand. Those shows enjoy outstanding audience appreciation. While Russian audiences in general prefer Russian-made series, through creative marketing STS has achieved higher ratings for Hollywood-made series than other free-to-air broadcasters.
