Luis Ernesto Michel Vergara (born June 8, 1979) in Guadalajara, Jalisco is a Mexican professional footballer, currently the starting goalkeeper for Chivas de Guadalajara, wearing jersey 1. Before Oswaldo Sánchez' departure from the club and a tournament after that, he wore Jersey # 1 still.

Biography

Michel debuted against Irapuato, replacing the suspended starting keeper Oswaldo Sanchez on September 24, with Chivas winning 3–2. Three years later, Michel found himself playing in the Clausura 2006 playoffs, when the usual second-choice keeper, Alfredo Talavera was not playing well and coach José Manuel de la Torre gave the starting spot to Michel. Luis Ernesto played well, despite receiving 6 goals in 3 games, and being eliminated by Pachuca, but he proved that he could be an effective substitute for Oswaldo Sanchez.Even though Chivas hasn't won a Championship since the abstence of the great Oswaldo Sanchcez. Months later, Michel played in the Copa Libertadores for 2006, playing in the first match against Veléz Sarsfield of Argentina in the quarterfinals.

Since his play in the Clausura 2006 playoffs, Luis Ernesto Michel traditionally wears a red and black goalie uniform, which has earned him the nicknames "El Diablo" and "El Coloradito". Michel is known to his teammates as "Michelito", but to many fans, he's known as "El Gato" for his cat-like aggressiveness.

He is currently the starting goalkeeper for Chivas, since Sánchez's departure to Santos Laguna he became a superstar. Despite his predecessor's popularity, Michel's goalkeeping style, similar to that of Sánchez, has earned him the nickname "Fray Michel" (Friar Michel) after "San" (saint) Oswaldo. Multiple times he has been called El Caballero Negro (The Dark Knight) due to the black uniform he wears on the Football Pitch .

During a Superliga match against CF Atlante, he fractured his elbow and is told that he is out for the Apertura 2008.

Recognition

Michel has a wax figure at the Madame Tussauds in London, England. Michel also won best goalkeeper of Clausura 2008 for his outstanding goalkeeping. Michel was going to be called for the Mexican National Team but due to his broken arm he will have to wait.
